I just found this sub because I was commenting on another community where someone was a little mistaken on a subject and I got down a rabbit hole of concierge medicine. So, I was looking for a place to find other people’s opinions on this topic.
For those who don’t know what concierge medicine is here is a semi edited version of my comment: If you can run without insurances you don’t have to pay a huge medical coding department to figure out what box to check to get insurance covered. Believe me when I say the medical coders are trying their best to get you to pay less because the hospitals know that their best way to ensure payment is to get it from the insurance and not have to go after patients with collections agencies and lawsuits. BUT doing away with insurance does away with these massive departments and cuts healthcare costs all around. Wait, you say that only the wealthy can afford to pay out of pocket for individualized healthcare? That’s falsely propagated by tv shows and movies that show the wealthy owning their own hospital wings and having doctors on retainer. This type of medicine is called concierge medicine or retainer medicine and sounds a whole lot fancier than it is. This can be for primary care medicine as well and often works out cheaper than insurance if you’ve implemented it correctly. You pay a doctor an annual or monthly fee and all of your wellness and preventative care is covered in that. You still pay lab fees and for prescriptions, but your doctor has negotiated prices that don’t involve insurance directly, so you get the best deal. In this model a doctor spends more time with every patient because they are able to have less to sustain their practice. The patient gets more attention and the doctor prevents burnout. The reason we don’t have this? Because of regulations against “doctor shopping” and insurance companies lobbying politics. What we have is a system where physicians are slaves to the insurance system and it honestly really sucks.
