Natural bug repellent?

I'm one of these people that gets bitten to death by mosquitos when I go on holiday and was wondering if anyone has tried any natural bug repellents that worked? Or even if you made your own? I don't want to use popular sprays, etc, due to the toxicity of them to both the user and the planet.
