Employer was generously paying 100% for medical coverage but recently informed they will begin charging employees for the benefit. My paycheck was never deducted for the previous low deductible high premium plan. I asked and have been told they are unable to change my coverage to a high deductible low premium plan. This means I am effectively locked into an unexpected $15k annual cost until the next open enrollment.
Shouldn't I be (legally) able to drop their coverage and enroll in a more affordable plan perhaps via an exchange? I never paid for their previous coverage. Doesn't their previous coverage amount to a perk they are no longer offering?
