Is this normal for an OBGYN practice (or other specialist practice) as a new patient?

I've been seeing a nurse practitioner who specializes in women's health and works out of my primary care office. An issue developed recently and I was given a referral and a list of local OBGYN practices. I called one and tried to schedule an appointment but was told to go to their website first and select a doctor. "I can't choose your doctor for you," said the receptionist, which I found rather off-putting. Is this typical of specialists? I've never been here so how am I supposed to know which of their doctors I want?
