A friend of mine recently got a letter from his healthcare provider (UPMC) that he has been dropped. Apparently, back in October, they claimed to have sent him a bill that went unpaid. However, he got no notices of the missing payment at all. In fact, November and December's bills were paid in full, and made no mention of the arrears.
So he received a notice saying that he's been dropped for that reason. He's called the UPMC office, and they told him that they won't reinstate him.
What can my friend do? What options does he have to pursue to get coverage? Are these options free or do they cost money, and if so, approximately how much can he expect to spend in addition to his premium payment?
Any help would be welcomed.
Edit: State is Pennsylvania, City is Pittsburgh.
