This is a long shot, but here goes. My Father in law works full time at a pretty low paying job, this leaves him in the grey area of making TOO much for government help and NOT ENOUGH to pay for his own insurance plan (his job doesn't offer it). I am not blind to fact that most likely there was an option for him but frankly he doesn't take care of himself and is pretty self-irresponsible.
Anyway. He contracted Pseudomonas and there were some complications. He has been in the hospital for 3 weeks and has a social worker helping him get on a sliding scale payment plan. The plan is awesome, according to the social worker once they get a diagnosis (which they now have) the emergency Medicaid will cover his medications when he leaves.
So we get the diagnosis and the plan is to send him home with a PICC and have an attendant come to the house every other day to administer the medication, at a cost of 6 thousand dollars. My in-laws don't have more than 500$ to their names at any given time. It seems, that now that there is a diagnosis they want to discharge him but the medicaid will take weeks to provide coverage leaving a gap in his care.
So the doctors suggested he is not sent home but instead to a nursing care facility for the treatment - but the nursing facility will garnish his social security and disability to recoup the 6 grand cost. His family cannot afford that, they depend on his income for rent.
Any idea what we can do? He needs to the PICC meds but can't afford it, and keeping him hostage and garnishing his SS seems cruel and unusual for NY.
Also, if this is not the best place to post this please let me know. I was thinking person finance or advise but I am not sure.
