The title says a lot of what's going on, but here's the deal:
My friend (let's call him N) recently left his job to travel the world. When he quit, the company he was at didn't send him any info on how to get insurance once the company-provided policy expired. Fast forward to last weekend when he smashed his leg on a rock and went to the ER. The nurse dismissed the idea of an MRI, told him it was a sprain, and gave him stitches for the wound. Fast forward again to this morning. He went to get his stitches removed, and was told he has a severed tendon. He's trying to work with the company he just left to see if they can help him get on a policy, but apparently the deadline to do so was today and he's not sure if he submitted his application in time. So there's a chance he has to have surgery without having any insurance. Keeping in mind that he was grossly misdiagnosed from the get-go, and because of that was walking around on a severed tendon with nothing but an ace bandage for a week (which probably exacerbated the injury) what are his best options to get this fixed and not go bankrupt? TLDR: friend was misdiagnosed, has to have surgery but doesn't have insurance. what are his options?
