Looking for advice. I switched insurance coverages, sustained an injury and now neither insurance groups want to cover the claim.

I live in the US. I had independent insurance but recently switched to insurance through my employer. My independent insurance ended on 2/28 and my employer insurance started 3/01. I injured my knee in a non-work related accident on 2/27 that will require surgery. My independent insurance covered the ER costs but will not cover anything past 2/28. My current insurance is considering my knee injury a pre-existing condition and does not want to cover the treatment. Are there any options out there that would help me pay for the surgery? A friend of mine got COBRA insurance when he injured his knee because he said you can back date COBRA by 60 days. Does anyone know if this is true?
