I want to share my experience to caution others who might unexpectedly find themselves needing disability support: One Medical may not provide the necessary assistance during critical times, especially in New York City or New Jersey.
Initially, I engaged with One Medical for routine care - not anticipating any long-term health issues, and certainly not long-term disability. At One Medical I had an established primary care provider who managed my care, including labs, and prescriptions.
As my condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to mobility challenges, I had to apply for short-term disability and my One Medical primary completed the form for the State's Temporary Disability claim.
However, I then received a diagnosis for a chronic condition, and my health is getting worse day by day, so my specialist recommended applying for long-term disability. He provided a comprehensive summary for the SSA and advised that my primary care provider complete the Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) form, given her proximity and our established relationship.
At first my primary care agreed to assist, however she abrutply withdrew support without explanation after the SSA deadline, leaving me without the necessary documentation. I tried reaching out to her and making a video appointment - she is ignoring my messages in the app and didn't show up for the video appointment.
I reached out to One Medical's Medical Director, but received no response. Follow-up calls only yielded vague assurances that the matter was "under review," with no concrete action taken for weeks.
Consequently:
- I have no income, as my temporary disability benefits have ended.
- My health continues to decline — I’m bedridden, rely on a wheelchair for mobility, and depend on my 70-year-old mother as a full-time caregiver.
- While I’m waiting for Medicaid to activate, I now have to start over with a new primary care provider — someone who doesn’t know my history, who I’ll need to re-explain everything to from scratch.
- As an unestablished patient, I fear they won’t be willing to complete critical SSA forms, or that their documentation won’t carry the same weight as that of a provider who has treated me over time.
If you're living with chronic illness or navigating disability — or even if you're just starting to face unexpected health issues like I did late 30's — be cautious about relying on One Medical. Apparently One Medical's business model is not to support us when we need them the most.
