I can’t afford health insurance I don’t know what to do

My husband and I (age 39, 40) have been without health insurance forever. We are looking for a plan. We have no major issues, however, my husband wants a primary and has some minor issues like anxiety that he’d like to get looked at. Overall we’re in good health but we’re nearing the 40 mark so I know it’s important for us to receive health care.

My husband makes about 70 grand a year. We are in that awkward position where we make too much to qualify for Medicaid, however, regular health insurance through his work, and through the healthcare.gov is too expensive for us to afford. The cheapest no deductible plan on healthcare.gov (which is overall cheaper yearly than plans with the deductible.. those ones with deductibles, have crazy deductible amount like 10 or 15 grand… ) would cost us $1000 a month, so 12k a year (plus copays and the like). there’s absolutely no way we can afford that. It’s not even an option at all.

I’m so frustrated that there can’t be a normal plan for a few hundred bucks a month for us. His work healthcare is very expensive as well, and very crappy when considering all the benefits.

So we are stuck under a rock and a hard place. I don’t know what to do. Should we just opt for paying out of pocket, and utilize low cost healthcare clinics? I can’t imagine that we would spend more than 12 grand a year on just regular primary care visits and minor health issues. If we had some major medical issues it would be a no-brainer to get the thousand dollar a month one.

For those of you who are stuck in between being poor and middle class, what do you do?

Thank you so much for your time in reading this
