Years ago I was in a severe accident, with uninsured/underinsured DUI motorists who were both incarcerated. Over 10 citations were written to three people.
My BF passed shortly thereafter. My pregnancy was terminated, I acquired Septicemia which looks like bruising on legs. Shortly thereafter I was diagnosed with Hep C. Thanks to a helmet, I’m here, although I still have some focus and balance issues and occasional seizures.
I had the most pathetic of student health insurance, so the ER, ICU and surgery costs were staggering, mostly because of out of network providers, specialist, transportation and insurance refusals. Treatments are still 100k more.
Whenever a bill comes in it goes out with a $5 bill, (only if it’s a prepaid envelope though). Many times they send the $5 back saying they don’t accept cash. (But it says all debts public and private, lol!)
The state Human Services sent a letter saying money would be taken from my estate for my future medications. (80k for a 1 1/2 to 2yr treatment). Lol, what estate?
Collectors call which I either answer in a foreign language, ignore or tell the collector they are in line to get paid but need an itemized statement which I dispute by replying“I only got 4 of those, not 5!” That’s if I am in a mood to talk at all.
Collectors call wanting to settle for a small percentage sometimes even as little as 20%. (Why not make it 0%). Last collector (today) wanted $120 on a $401 bill. 30% of the original. There is literally no motivation to pay a bill which will be less next month.
I either cash it out cash immediately to a debit card or just send it all to my credit card or power bill for advance payment. My credit score is actually pretty good, my lack of income being the main factor.
Why this long assed post? NOT FOR SYMPATHY!!! (Please keep that to yourself if you respond). because an envelope in the mailbox with an imaginary number game does not matter one bit. The accident is what caused this, the money doesn’t really matter in my case.
As long as the insurance companies want to play this racket, the people will end up paying single payer or not. What Americans need is a “maximum allowable charge” across the board.
If you have ever used a FAR you know what I am talking about. The government has a maximum rate for everything they buy, why can’t we?
