I had minor outpatient surgery at an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC). When I asked the facility for a detailed bill, they informed me that ASCs don't have to do detailed billing like a hospital does. I do have insurance, but it is the high deductible type, so I like to try to stay informed of my charges. The bill they provided took a $16,200 procedure and broke it down into two billing codes, one for $15,206 and the other for $1,000. Is this normal? How am I supposed to to be an educated consumer, especially when on the hook for almost $1,000, when I can't see what went into that $15,000?
