First pass a law that they can't go after your house or car for medical bills. Everyone over a certain age gets a free check up every year. A lot of this could be done with kiosks in pharmacies, like the ones that check blood pressure. Paid for with a tax credit. Over charging for necessary medications or services is price gouging, pass a law stating this and enforce it. We shouldn't be subsidizing cheap drugs for europeans on the backs of poor americans that dont have healthcare. Most people should get healthcare through their job, or if they're wealthy, private insurance. Leaving the government to better care for those that need it. There are clinics that do nothing but hernia surgeries. Fast, efficient, better results at a price that's 75% lower than hospitals. That's capitalism working and should be explored. What other procedures could be optimized like that? Every hospital should be required to maintain a web page detailing the average total cost and success rate of all their procedures so we can shop for the best care. If you cant choose then your bill should be based on the lowest provider price in the area. Big Pharma should be a service industry. If they work towards the benefit of the people, tax breaks and government money should be available, if they run off a punitive greedy model as they do now, they should get nothing. A stockholder hoping for an extra dollar per share cannot trump a guy who needs medical care. Im a fan of urgent care. It takes the load off emergency room, and should have reduced our healthcare costs significantly, but I haven't seen the data. I would also consider low interest medical loans, so people can pay for basic health services on their own if necessary. Im 60 years old and haven't ever had an issue that costs over 2000$. And if you get drunk and try to jump off a ladder into the pool, you really shouldn't expect other peoples to foot that whole bill.
