I live in Maine, but from Canada originally. I recently discovered that the CEO of MaineMed one of the larger non-profit hospitals in Maine, gets paid $1.8 million annually (and he is not a doctor), while his counterpart just across the border in New Brunswick, Canada in a similar sized facility/ gets paid around $300-400,000 (and he is actually an MD). Why does this happen? Hospitals in Canada are privately run non-profits for the most part, similar to many American hospitals, but why can't American hospitals keep the costs of their upper management down? Especially since there is no correlation to high management pay and hospital quality?
