Hi r/healthcare! I'm an MSW student doing research on aging within the LGBTQIA+ community. I'm interested in the relationship between healthcare and federal/state policy with regard to provider training. Basically what I'm trying to determine is to what degree (if at all) providers are required to train or educate employees on anti-discrimination or issues commonly faced by the LGBTQIA+ community (e.g. HIV/AIDS, historical oppression, homophobia/transphobia, etc.). I'm looking specifically at hospitals (including hospice and palliative care facilities/units) and long-term care facilities for elders as well.
So my question is, who or what determines the content of provider training? Where should I be looking? Is health insurance involved at all? I'm guessing it's a state thing plus hospital policy, but I'm struggling to find laws/statutes that determine what the content looks like. Also just don't have a 360 degree grasp on the policy side of healthcare (yet...).
I live in WA state for reference and am researching WA state laws, so anyone local to the area please chime in. Keep me honest -- I don't think my questions would be in violation of anything HIPAA-related, but if this is overstepping legally, please let me know and I will take this post down.
