My employer may have messed up my enrollment for coverage. What is my liability if I get sick or injured right now? What options do I have for short term coverage?

My new company isn't inspiring confidence in a lot of procedural things. My first day of eligibility was supposed to be December 1st, and I got a form summarizing my elections... but nothing else. No emails, no packets in the mail, zero. I tried creating accounts for my providers (UnitedHealthCare and Delta Dental), and they only displayed coverage from my previous job. After hours on the phone and being told I might have to get the old accounts deleted, I was able to get a dental "membership number" (that I don't trust yet), but UHC told me that they never received any requests for enrollment.

Can I be retroactively enrolled in health insurance for the month of December, or am I just out of luck? Would UHC cover me if I were hurt or needed a hospital visit? Can my employer even still enroll me in January (open enrollment is in June) even if it's their problem?

What are my options for interim insurance?
