So maybe the simplest answer is just "don't complain," but I feel like the circumstances here should be rectified. I'll try to be both brief and thorough in the explanation. We are in North Carolina.
My wife is currently 5 months pregnant and both her primary care doctor and ob/gyn are part of the same healthcare group that owns a local hospital. On January 11, my wife was symptomatic and tested positive for COVID. Her primary care doctor recommended a course of treatment but wanted the ob to verify the dosage recommendations (for zinc, vitamin c, vitamin d, and baby aspirin). She called the ob and was told that a message would be sent to the doctor. The next day, the doctor still had not contacted her or her primary care doctor. She called again and was told that they could discuss this at her next ob appointment which was already scheduled for January 22 (today). My wife didn't tell me about this interaction until the following day because of how tired she was, but when I found I out told her that she needed to tell them that wasn't an acceptable answer. She called them back and was told that the doctor had sent the message already. After she got off the phone, she checked the portal and had no messages from the doctor.
At this point, I called back and spoke to someone who asked me to verify that my wife was being actively treated for a symptomatic case and that the ob was not treating her for it (this was a very odd interaction). I explained the situation again and she told me that the doctor had sent a message. I asked her to verify this and she went into the portal and realized that no message had been sent. She told me that she would get on things right away. I got a call back about 5 minutes later that the message "only sent part of the way the first time" and that it should be in the inbox now, which it was.
Though it took a while, my wife's symptoms did begin to subside and she went back to her primary care doctor yesterday (January 21) and received the all-clear. So today she went to the ob appointment and was promptly informed that they wouldn't see her because it had not been 14 days since her positive test. When she asked about being told to keep the appointment, they asked if she had even informed them of her positive test. They then responded that it was their policy and they couldn't do anything about it and she would have to reschedule the appointment.
I don't doubt that 14 days is the office's policy, my problem is with the entire lack of communication throughout this process. This contrasts greatly with the primary care doctor who was very proactive and engaged in my wife's treatment. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt that maybe the first message really didn't send correctly and that someone miscounted the days between test and appointment. Even doing so, I'm left very dissatisfied with the overall level of engagement or concern that this office provided. This naturally undermines our confidence in the office's ability to care for my wife and our child.
This is our first child, so maybe we are overreacting here. That's part of the reason I wanted to post into a broader community. If that's the kind of recommendation that people have, I'm okay with that. But if the events that transpired warrant some kind of action, I'd also like to know what kind of action could be taken. If I have posted in the wrong sub for this kind of request, please forgive me and direct me to a more appropriate sub. Thanks in advance.
