[Question - Other] Ghosting a doctor?

Does anybody here have any experience with either...

  1. Refusing a doctor's recommended medical treatment, especially if the doctor wants to prescribe a medication?
  2. Ghosting a doctor?

[End of question. Read on if you want to know why I'm asking.]

Six months ago, I went in for my first general physical in over 30 years, and found out that my cholesterol is higher than what they consider normal. I also had a coronary CT scan, and found out that I currently don't have any issues with my arteries, so I'm basically not really at risk of a heart attack or stroke, despite my cholesterol levels. The doctor just wanted me to exercise more and eat healthier just to bring the numbers down.

Personally, I couldn't give a crap about my numbers, if I'm not really at risk of any dangerous health conditions, but I do know that being in good health is better than not being in good health, so I made some changes to my diet and made more time to exercise. Mainly I just wanted to see if I could actually improve my cholesterol on my own, without any medication and without sticking to insanely strict rules.

Well, it turns out, I didn't succeed. I had another cholesterol test the other day, saw the results posted today, and the numbers were almost back to where they were back in February. Higher than normal, but not dangerous. But my attitude is basically, I don't know what else I could do improve it, but at this point, I don't care. It's probably going to require some drastic measures that I'd really rather not do if my current health condition isn't killing me.

But the thing is, I know my doctor wants me to set up a followup appointment to discuss my results and come up with a modified treatment plan, and based on our initial conversation back in February, I suspect that she'll want to prescribe a medication, since I failed to improve my cholesterol on my own. And if so, then I'd be on it indefinitely, and have to keep going back on a regular basis to track my progress. Just to bring down some frickin' numbers.

My doctor's office called me earlier today, and the assistant left me a message asking me to call back and schedule an appointment. I've been ignoring it. I'd rather just put this behind me and move on with my life. I never had any intentions of continuing to see this doctor on a permanent basis anyway when I first went in back in February. Is there an easy way to tell the doctor that I've decided to move on? Or can I just ignore their calls and expect that they'll quickly give up?
