Hi everyone, first-time poster and lurker here, but I finally have a question.
I wonder if you'd know about other natural alternatives for hair dye? I've tried the Lush Henna bar, left it on my head for 3 hours and...it didn't cover my grays at all. Maybe if I'm generous, it tinted them? But not enough to have any noticeable difference, given the amount of effort.
Basically I only use hair dye to touch up my grays once they grow out about 2 inches at the root (I started graying young). I have relatively thick and black east Asian hair. I used to use a dye I bought in the store that would develop and do the job in 30 minutes, and not be so messy, but I'm scared of those recent headlines about hair chemicals and cancer so I'm trying to switch. I still definitely want to cover my roots as they're really noticeable against black hair.
So my questions are:
-
Are there other permanent hair dye (Grey touch up) natural options other than Henna? (preferably one that isn't so messy, and if possible something that doesn't take more than 3 hours) that is strong enough to dye my Grey's? Even if I don't use the Lush bar, and use powdered Henna, it will probably be just as messy.

Since this is only the second time I've used henna I understand I may just have done it wrong. I mixed the solid bar with enough hot water to melt it into a cream like texture and applied it on my roots (as best I could) and wrapped my head in cling wrap (are there alternatives to this so I don't use plastic?), then let it develop for 3 hours before washing it out. Is there something I should be doing differently?

I read that to touch up grays I should also try dyinf my hair with red Henna first and only after with the black, but if the black barely covers my Greys, would the red first actually be effective? Or is this a marketing ploy to get me to buy two types of Henna instead of one?
Thanks for any help/suggestions!
