[Question - Insurance] How to find a Health Insurance Plan

So I recently left my job to try freelancing, but I can't figure out how the healthcare system works in the US. I am trying to read up stuff but it is honestly so confusing. I am in California. I have some income from freelancing and am wondering how do I try to buy the insurance? Once, I buy it, can I immediately go to the doctor for a checkup?
