My legs jerk around involuntarily when I am falling asleep

Usually it happens at night, but it has happened at other times when I have to sit for a while. During presentations, on flights/car trips, etc. It's not painful, but it's extremely awkward and uncomfortable. My legs will start feeling kind of "heavy", then it feels like there is a buildup of tension, like something being wound up too tight, then they will literally jump. Like if someone was close enough it could injure them. It goes away if I get up and walk for a couple of minutes but that doesn't always work. How can I get rid of this? Thanks in advance.
