Advice

Hi! I am a sonographer who graduated in May. I enjoy sonography, but it was difficult to find a job even though I am registered and there are a lack of positions in my area which sucks as my coworkers aren’t very nice but I know you can encounter this in all fields. I really enjoy the patient care aspect of my job but I spend only 45 minutes max with my patients. I am considering going to nursing school to become an RN while also doing ultrasound PRN to keep up with my skills. The variety of opportunities in nursing stands out to me and I know I will not have to worry about finding a job. I was wondering if anyone else did this as well? I know the responsibilities are different than ultrasound and they both have their own stressors. I want to have something aside from ultrasound as job security is a concern of mine, and being a full time sonographer is already starting to take a toll on my body. I don’t want to stop ultrasound completely, but I need another option as well. I’d love to be able to do more in healthcare and with my patients.

Healthcare administrators - payroll errors eating into your margins?

Building software to catch healthcare payroll mistakes before they cost you money. The problem I keep hearing about: - Shift differential miscalculations - Overtime errors on premium pay - Missing weekend/holiday rates - Compliance violations that trigger penalties Instead of finding out after paychecks are cut (then dealing with corrections, angry staff, potential penalties), this would flag issues upfront during your review process. For those managing healthcare operations - how big a problem is payroll accuracy? Are you spending significant time on corrections and employee complaints? Looking for input from people dealing with healthcare workforce management.

Regarding Hospital-Employee Personal Information

New to the healthcare industry. Working in a medical laboratory. Just curious if it’s common-place that managers/supervisors post/share their subordinates personal phone numbers publicly??

Myself & a few other new hires are not super cool & comfortable with it, and it’s not something that was ever approved by us as individuals.

Dr Celal Candirli & Dr Serdar Bademci NO SURGERY NO REFUND £20,000 ($26,900)

I want to share my experience in case it helps prevent someone else from going through the same thing.

In November 2024, I traveled to Istanbul for a consultation with Dr. Celal Candirli regarding jaw surgery to correct an underbite. The appointment was arranged by Dr. Serdar Bademci.

At the clinic, I met with both Dr. Celal Candirli and Dr. Serdar Bademci. We discussed the surgical plan and the pricing. After I returned home, Dr. Serdar Bademci contacted me via WhatsApp saying I needed to send a 25% deposit immediately to lock in the agreed price. I transferred the payment directly to Dr. Serdar Bademci, and over time, I ended up sending a total of £20,000 (approx. $26,900 / €23,000) to him.

The surgery was originally scheduled for March 2025, but it kept getting postponed with excuse after excuse. By June, it still hadn’t happened. Due to my job, I had limited availability later in the year, so I asked for a refund — something I had been told was always possible if plans changed.

Dr. Serdar Bademci said he would start the refund process and even requested my bank details. After that, he stopped replying completely.

Then, in late July, I was contacted by Dr. Celal Candirli, who told me that Dr. Serdar Bademci had taken my money — and money from other patients — and spent it abroad. Since then, Dr. Serdar Bademci has not responded to any attempts at contact.

I’ve reported this to my bank’s fraud department, and also to Action Fraud UK, but so far the money has not been recovered. I’m now seeking legal advice and exploring next steps.

It’s been incredibly frustrating and upsetting. I saved for this surgery for years. To end up with no procedure, no refund, and no accountability is something I never imagined. Just wanted to share so others know to be extremely cautious

Does my ankle look fractured or broken?

I was going down the stairs and missed the last step and landed on the side of my ankle and fell completely to the floor. It’s been five days and I’ve had it in a wrap and a boot and have been taking very good care of it, but my friends have been telling me that I should go to the doctor because it looks broken. It doesn’t feel broken, but also I’ve never broken an ankle before. I don’t wanna spend the money if they’re just gonna put me back in a boot. Does this look broken or fractured?

America First Healthcare question

a family member of mine, who recently had a child, is looking into getting a policy from america first because she saw some influencers advertise for them. I've heard that they aren't real healthcare but cant find a whole lot about them on the internet apart from their website or their Instagram page. both set off some red flags for me. i was hoping if anyone here was willing to provide some sources that talk about them so i can show my family member that this might not be where to get a policy. thank you to all in advance.

3 words memory question- insurance

Hi everyone,

I recently did a wellness assessment with ambetter. We discussed vitals and if I needed anything. In the middle of the call, she said I'm going to say 3 words and I want you to repeat them at the end. She said the 3 words and then we finished our convo. At the end she asked me to tell her the 3 words like she was testing my memory at 37. What was that all about? Has anyone else had that happen?

Thanks!

I feel like I go scammed by my doctor. Is there anything I can do?

Í scheduled an annual physical at a new clinic after moving. When I arrived the doctor told me since I was a new patient this visit would be to establish care and the physical would be done “if she had time” She basically asked me all the questions I had already answered on the forms prior to arriving about prior diagnosis and medications, essentially a review of information I had taken the time to provide prior to the visit. I then had to schedule a second appointment for the actual physical. I’m a healthy person, none of this is in depth.Anyway, I received a bill for almost $500 AFTER insurance for the first visit. Assuming this was a mistake, I contacted the office and they confirmed that since they had “listed a diagnosis” this was a medical care visit, not preventative care. Again, I am being seen by a separate doctor for this diagnosis (ADHD), and the new PCP made it clear she does not oversee these meds so is not overseeing, nor did she diagnose this. It was part of my medical history. They insist their billing is correct. I feel like I got scammed out of my time and money. Is there anything I can do? Is it normal to have 2 separate visits to establish care and to code one of the visits as non preventative care?

How Much Do You Know About the Medicare System ?

I have been on Medicare a long time because I am older than dirt - I know it pretty well. Even before that time, I was managing the affairs of many of my older relatives so I was seeing the cost and coverage of the Medicare system even before us Baby Boomers hit the system.

And that we have - we have hit the system with a roar and we aren’t finished yet - not til about 2030 when the remaining Boomers turn 65 and.or decide to go on this Medicare program.

Thus far, I haven’t been a high health care user and I hope that can continue but cost have soared since about 2010 - the 1st year when the Social Security Trustee started warning us of the impending shortfall in both Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and in the Social Security Trust Funds.

EVERY year the Social Security Trustee Report ends the same way -and I quote from all of these annual reports -

CONCLUSION: Lawmakers have many options for changes that would reduce or eliminate the long-term financing shortfalls. Taking action sooner rather than later will allow consideration of a broader range of solutions and provide more time to phase in changes so that the public has adequate time to prepare.

Then what do our lawmakers do - NOTHING even after the appointment of several different Bi-partisan Commissions, all with recommendations -

Politics is gonna be the end of us, somehow and someway. I have no doubt but I am old. so it will be up to the younger ones to determine the course of these programs - Medicare and Social Security.

Is it too late for me to pay the cash price instead of using insurance?

I recently went to urgent care and they said the price for the office visit would be $150. They asked for my insurance info and I provided it, although I told them that it was a high deductible plan, I won't hit the deductible (last month on this plan) and that I'd have to pay the full cost out of pocket, so I'd be fine just not using insurance if it'd be cheaper.

Later I get the bill from insurance and it shows gross price for the office visit of $475 with an insurance-negotiated price of $275, which i now have to pay 100% of since i haven't hit my deductible.

I feel taken advantage of since I now have to pay more money to use the insurance plan that I already pay a ton for, and I don't feel like i was actually given an option by the medical office.

Do i have any options here or is this a live and learn moment? How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Will patients be leaving the US to other countries for better healthcare?

First time poster here. Thanks for having me.

It's basically a super straightforward question, but I'll expand anyways.

There's a saying I've heard for a long time. "People come to the US from all around the world for our healthcare." I understand it as many of the best doctors practice here and it seems like the reason why is because other countries may not have as good doctors.

But now we have oversight that may prevent our doctors from doing what's best for our patients - either now or in the future. (I'm basically saying Trump/RFK Jr./et al are screwing this up.) Since/If this is the case, we're not having the best healthcare - not because we don't have great doctors, but because the bureaucracy is the worst.

So are we going to see mass exodus of sick patients leaving to other countries where their doctors can perform their best?

Billing issues with urgent care?

We've had two recent billing issues with the same urgent care-

First, my husband went in to get an inhaler prescription on short notice (his doctor didn't have appointments for weeks). He paid an $85 copay in office and then was sent a bill for another $280 "not covered by insurance". They billed insurance twice- one for the facility and one for the doctor and insurance paid one of them but not the other.

Then, before we had the first billing issue, my son cut his hand... Took him in and they glued it- 20 minute appointment. They billed insurance as a "hospital" and charged $2,400. Insurance paid $1,800, and now they want the additional $600.

We've called and they refuse to budge on the bills. There's actually a phone tree option for "lawyers" to press when you call, so clearly they get sued a lot.

What are our options? Is there somewhere to report them for misrepresenting themselves? If I had wanted to pay ER rates, I would have gone to the ER. 🤦

Hey all. For a long time my mother dealt with getting me my prescriptions but after I moved out around a year ago i’ve been struggling to get my maintenance meds. I’ve been using my health insurance app to schedule urgent care appointments to get prescription refills for a while now, but the last doctor I talked to told me that that would be my last refill until I get a primary care doctor. Are we drowning in health advice but missing real clarity?

Everywhere you look, there’s health info—articles, hacks, “miracle” tips. Most of it is noise.

What I find interesting is predictive medicine. Instead of waiting for someone to get sick, it uses real-world data to spot risks early and help people act before problems start.

Curious what others think: is this the real future of healthcare, or will the system always stay reactive?

Challenging the LVN exam as a CNA via Method 3 in California is a total sham/scam. My experience.

For RN students or dropouts, or those with years of CNA work experience hoping to challenge the NCLEX for LVN via Method 3 in California, I can tell you this pathway to nursing does not exist. The BVNPT (board of vocational nurses) makes it absolutely impossible for one to qualify via Method 3 unless you are a foreign graduate of a bsn program.

They have wasted $750 of my money on application fees and years of my life acquiring “bedside nursing experience” only to reject my application over tiny technicalities. They will find every excuse to throw out your work experience forms and they have a long laundry list of 20 skills they say that every single one has to be check marked as “YES” by your RN supervisor. If 19/20 skills are marked YES, one marked NO, your work experience form goes straight into the trash. Doesn’t matter if you worked there for several years as a CNA. The crazy part is that no CNA employed healthcare facility offers experience on EVERY skill on their ridiculous checklist.

They have wacky requirements such as “perform an enema” “diabetic urine testing” “collection of specimens” “sterile aseptic technique” and other skills outside of a CNA scope in California that a facility would never authorize a CNA to do, let alone sign you off for it. These are tasks delegated to the LVN/RN only. If you write in “No, but assisted the RN in performing skill” that isn’t good enough for them and your work experience form goes to the trash. They also audit everything and threaten your RN supervisor and go after their license should they check “Yes” on a skill that the facility doesn’t practice such as “using dipsticks for urine testing.” With that huge liability, your RN supervisor will try to put as many “NO”s to Cover their *ss. It is impossible for these BVNPT freaks to accept your documents.

They also expect you to obtain 240 hours in a Maternity ward and 240 hours with pediatrics. The crazy thing is none of the maternity wards in LA hire CNAs for the role. They run the show without CNA‘s. It’s just RNs. There is no possible way to obtain this experience as a CNA, I have tried. They also want 240 hours of Peds but you can count on one hand how many pediatric acute care centers there are in all of Southern California. If just one item is Mark no, they reject all your pediatric hours. I never once had the opportunity to perform an enema on a child because our facility did not allow CNAs to do that among other things on their skills checklist so now they won’t take my pediatric hours on top of med/surg hours.

These bvnpt bastards also refuse to give you any information or answer any questions on anything regarding your previous nursing education unless you pay them $330 to evaluate your transcripts for “possible credit in lieu of CNA work experience.” Then once you’ve paid them, they tell you that you are missing something, but that you are unable to correct the “deficiency” until you pay them another $330 in 2 years after the now open application expires. Essentially, you are stuck in an endless loop of reapplying every two years for them to find something wrong with your paperwork and to reject your application. You cannot submit new paperwork until the current application expires. This method is a nightmare to deal with and I honestly wish it never existed. It has caused me depression. I do not wish this pain on anyone else and I hope to discourage by warning anyone else not to pursue this method. If you want to be an LVN so badly, I highly recommend going out of state for it because that way you won’t have to deal with the *ssholes who run the California BVNPT. They also require more clinical hours than any other state in the US. Many states only require 1/3 of the amount of clinical hours as California does for LVN/LPN and are also only 1/3 of the cost. I post this on reddit to hopefully warn others not to waste their years and dollars on this failed method 3 CNA to LVN so they don’t get their hopes crushed. The only solution for a CNA to become an LVN is to go to school, and ideally outside the state of California.

Per diem Training

I just got hired for a per diem job at a hospital. The entire process took about over a month to get onboarded and my start date was today with orientation. Problem is I emailed my supervisor and they’re asking me to do two full weeks of training. Im assuming its monday-friday, 8–4. I already work a full-time job which im about to cut to part time within the next like 10 days so I can work more per diem shifts. But I didn’t expect a per diem position to require that kind of schedule for training.

Has anyone else been expected to do this for a per diem role? Is this normal to be expected to do two full weeks of training away from your main job and do we know if there is any type of flexibility? Should I bring up my full-time job about scheduling ? I already emailed my per diem role supervisor letting her know im scheduled at my current job and if we can work something out for the next two weeks.

So for some reason I have a HSN (Health Safety Net) that I was supposed to only get temporarily (long story short; I made my income too low that it made me submit to qualify for MassHealth, but I switched it back to my real income and that part never went away), like for 90 days, but for some reason mine was never given an end date and so I still have it.

I’ve called multiple times to ask what it’s about (because I don’t have dental insurance but endless dental problems that insurance won’t cover but HSN will at least cover cleanings & fillings/cavities. (I need tooth implants..)

Has anyone else experienced this? That you just have a never-ending HSN coverage? (Not that I’m at all complaining!!!!!!)

How Population Health Data Is Changing Preventive Care in the U.S.

Over the past year, I’ve been working with a health data research group that tracks wellness trends and studies how people’s habits and health risks are changing.

One thing that really surprised me is how much more proactive care could happen if we made better use of the health data we already have.

I’m curious:

  1. Have you ever participated in a health research program?
  2. Do you think these programs should have a bigger role in preventive care across the country?

Happy to discuss more in the comments if anyone’s interested in the details.
