Best short term health insurance option

Hello, so I was recently laid off and therefore lost my health insurance coverage too. Through my employer I have the opportunity to continue benefits through COBRA, but my 60 days is coming to an end soon and its not necessarily cheap insurance when I have to pay the full amount. I still don't have a new job and trying to figure out what to do. I hope to have a new job soon, but unlikely before the 60 days ends.

My wife has a new job lined up, but her health insurance benefits won't start until about 3 months from when COBRA 60 day window ends, so at most we will need to cover a 3 month gap if I don't find a job even sooner.

It's just the two of us and we don't have any ongoing medical issues or visits, so we really just need this to cover us if something really bad and unexpected takes place.

Does anyone have recommendations for this? Just trying to do this in the most cost effective way as possible.

Also, I guess if I chose to not retroactively get COBRA we will have been uninsured for 60 days. Would there be an issue with having a gap in our insurance there? We are both relatively young and healthy without pre-existing conditions to be concerned with.

TL;DR : My wife and I need basic healthcare coverage for at most 3 months between jobs and don't want to spend more money on it than we have to. Also wondering if there's an issue/risks with gaps in insurance.

Easiest way to transfer medical records?

Hey, so I've seen about a dozen different doctors in the last 5 years. I just made an appointment to see my new medi-cal doctor in July, and unless I get a job with benefits they will stay my doctor indefinitely. Is it possible to get my medical records delivered to me personally so I can just print them out and hand them to the new doctor? It would be a huge help.

Is it easy to meet women working in healthcare?

I'm currently working as a financial analyst and ever since the pandemic and the remote work revolution there's basically no way to meet girls- or just people in general.

I find my work very isolating and meaningless. I really miss talking to people and interacting with others on a daily basis. Not to mention happy hours and conferences where there's opportunities to meet potential partners.

I've tried looking for a new job but it's quite difficult and it's been months with no luck.

I'm almost 30 now and have always been interested in a career in healthcare for other reasons as well. I'm hoping to apply to post-bacc programs and begin classes in the fall- but I'm curious if it's easy to meet women in this field since they increasingly dominate the profession.

healthcare careers with not too much physics/math, more biology and good pay

I’m a first year doing a health degree and I was previously looking at radiation therapy however the amount of math and physics involved is really worrying me because those two are my weakest subjects. I am very very good at biology and anatomy. What are some healthcare careers that make good money and are not too math/physics related (not a doctor). My other thing is if it’s worth it to give up on radiation therapy bc I’m bad at math and physics?

What happens when nurses leave?

So I work and have always worked in small town hospitals where we usually have 1 - 2 icu patients, not used to seeing 6 - 20+ ICU patients on the floor. I'm asking since I have been seeing mass "walk outs" and then I think what happens when this does occur? The patients transferred out? The remaining ICU nurses pick up extra shifts for crazy pay? Like I don't get how a hospital could have low staffing then have what staff there is walk out and everything just keeps moving forward ... What happens afterwards?

How to relocate healthcare from CA to NY?

I am going off to college and I need to make sure I have health care that suits my needs. I am born and raised in California, all I've known is Kaiser Permanente. I like the way they have so many doctors, and advice nurse I could call, online portals where I can easily refill my prescriptions, contact my doctor, set an appointment, view test results, etc.

Does NYC have a system\hospital like that out there? Can someone explain what the medical services out there are like?

I've done a simple Google search and it only confused\overwhelmed me even more.

What medical system\hospital do you recommend for POC and women in New York City?

Jobs that pay $250k or more that isn’t a medical doctor

Just graduated college and spent my undergrad preparing for medical school. Until I began working at a hospital and saw how miserable the doctors there were. The residents there have killed many of my patients though careless mistakes because the system doesn’t let them sleep and pays them pennies. I am newly engaged and want to have kids sooner than later. So I decided to stop pursuing an MD/DO.

I’m in the middle of making my applications. I’m wondering what some other lucrative healthcare jobs are.

Kaiser Permanente shady practices?

At the beginning of the month, my mom received a stool test kit, she broke a part of it though and couldn’t get a sample to send back so she emailed Kaiser to send a second one which they said she would receive in two weeks. However, a few days after requesting for the second test kit, and over a week before receiving it, she got an email from Kaiser saying her tests came back negative even though she never submitted anything because my mother broke the first kit. Is Kaiser automating emails? This has to be unethical right but is it illegal? Kaiser has been getting worse lately too. She’s been having issues getting referred to to a urologist even though she’s been going to the doctor repeatedly due to pain that she thinks is a uti. Had to wait over two hours and the doctor left after 5 minutes of talking cuz she was behind schedule. Did Kaiser resort to not actually doing lab tests and sending people negative test results too now? Didn’t know where to post this as askreddit doesn’t allow for medical or legal advice. Thank you 🙏

How much does it cost to visit a specialist and pay out of pocket in USA?

i'm from the TX border and have no insurance but I was thinking of visiting a specialist (gyno/onco) in a big city like Houston or Boston to check on my ovarian cysts. Basically I need the opinion of a pro. I would be paying out of pocket and basically I want to know what the procedure is like and how it works. I already have my radiologist imaging and blood tests (in Spanish though-from Mexico) will they accept these?

How do I make sure my labs are not sent to out-of-network provider?

I've been to 2 annual check-ups in NY at 2 different locations. Each time, I specifically mentioned my insurance but somehow my labs were sent to an out-of-network lab. Last year, I highlighted the issue with the doctor's office before they sent the labs but still the same thing happened. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield so it's not as if I have an unknown insurance provider.

Personally, I don't know what I can do from my side to make sure that doesn't happen again. Looking for any advice about how to not have this happen again this year?

Medicaid not paying a bill from when I was insured - what do I do?

Hey everyone. I had Medicaid from Oct 2022 - Dec 2023 (aged out, so now i’m uninsured). I have two medical bills from when I was still insured, yet they’re refusing to pay them? I tried getting to someone on the phone but the navigation process was a nightmare. What do I do to make this go away/make them pay the bills?

Side note how bad is it to be in medical debt because I am suffering from these and other bills

Is MyChart E-Check In being used to force people to agree to waive Medicare Insurance (billing) protections?

My parent has to have surgery on short notice. They set up mychart and told her to use it for E-Check in. The E-Check In doesn't address pre-surgery instructions, or anything. It's just a bunch of legalese that appears to waive her medicare protections. Her MyChart has no care team assigned as the doctors are external to the institution so messaging is turned off.

We live in Texas so we have new laws on surprise billing as well that this check-in appears to be waiving her protections there as well (IANAL).

I know MyChart records are legal documents. Is MyChart being used to trick people into waiving medicare billing protections? Basically agreeing to pay more than medicare covers. Do you have to use E-Check In? Can you just check in the day of and refuse to sign those portions of any paperwork.

This hospital system tried to trick a friend into waiving their right to medicaid protections and pay more than what medicaid would pay and kept asking them to agree and speak clearly as they were being recorded.

How do you protect your loved one, in this situation?

Green and red flags in healthcare jobs?

I am applying for another clinical support staff position (think technician/MA and similar) and after some healthcare experience over the years I have concluded that I am not always good at spotting the red flags hiding among the sparkle of a shiny new job offer other than the most blatantly obvious signs like low non-competitive pay, no-benefits positions, abundant signs of high turnover, disturbingly high hiring bonuses, and any job posting with "Rockstar" in the title.

I've learned that hiring management who appear kind, understanding, and supportive are usually just lizard people who believe everyone is replaceable and the only thing that matters are numbers and productivity with no regard for work-life balance or empathy for employees who--for whatever cruel twist of fate--fall on hard times. I've seen people who are genuinely competent, caring, and overall excellent in what they do get fired over the most understandable, easily resolvable, or inconsequential things like clocking in five or ten minutes early when policy dictates that all employees must clock in at exactly the same time, or after an extended medical leave for legitimate, documented health conditions, while the toxic, gossiping employees who put in half the effort somehow manage to stay.

While there is nothing wrong with putting your best foot forward with your strengths in a job interview I would never straight up lie about something and would never want to take a job that hired me because I lied about my experience, skills, or work style. I also believe that while poor management seems to be an epidemic and may to some degree be inescapable, especially in corporate healthcare, there are still good places to work in healthcare with day-to-day work relationships and culture in a healthy, functional, and communicative workplace dynamic even when it is still inevitably filled with a natural array of challenges...but it is more difficult to detect what truly lies behind the curtain when you are being interviewed. I often look at ratings on multiple sites but take it with a grain of salt because good employees will give lower ratings to poor companies, but bad employees will give bad ratings to good companies, and bad employees may also highly rate bad companies they thrive in which kind of destroys my trust in the integrity of the rating system altogether.

What are some red flags and green flags for jobs and interviews that you look out for? Specifically, I'm looking for the more nuanced signs a workplace may be a bad or good place to work. Are there questions you ask in the interview to suss out the real workplace culture? What are your deal breakers and how do you know when an offer is too good to be true?

I also see some good looking jobs that have few to no review which in some industries may be a red flag and an indication a fake job, but in healthcare, with an increasing population in the area where I live, this is likely to be more common. While I would be interested in growing with a new company rather than trying to fit into a well-established company that is not always friendly toward new people, it can be even harder to know whether it will be a good place to work or not due to their lack of track record. I would be interested to hear your thoughts!

New job’s insurance premium is $1,500+ a month. Is this typical?

I recently started a new job at a small company. In my past four companies I haven’t paid more than $250/month in medical costs. This place is offering two plans, one that costs $1200/month with a $3,000 family deductible and $1500/month with a $1500 family deductible. I mentioned that I thought these were very high and was told they’re less than the national average. I get primary care through the VA and only use insurance for my wife and children. Should I look at maybe getting a different plan from the marketplace for my family or would these costs be about the same?

Billed for COVID shot I received in NYC in August 2023

Hello,

I received a bill on April 1st of this year for about $190 for one dose of the COVID vaccine. I received the shot in mid-August of last year. I was uninsured at the time and wanted to be absolutely certain that I would receive the shot at no cost to me. The urgent care facility I went to had a sign saying “Free COVID vaccines”, and I asked the front desk if the vaccine would be free, to which they said yes. I’m positive that if there was any doubt I would have gone somewhere else for the vaccine.

Am I going to have to fork up $200 for being lied to? Is there any way I can fight this claim? If anyone has any information or suggestions for me, I’d be tremendously thankful.

Your thoughts on compliance training

I’m creating/revamping some compliance online training on various topics including PPE, HazCom, handwashing hygiene, bloodborne pathogens etc. The audience is healthcare personnel in large hospitals and physicians offices.

It’s a new domain & industry for me, so I’d love to hear from people who work in the field. I feel like a lot of compliance training assumes people don’t do things because they don’t know how to do them. I’d like to explore and uncover any other potential reasons or challenges healthcare personnel have when it comes to completing and acting on compliance training.

If you work in healthcare, I’d love to get your thoughts: Where does compliance training miss the mark? What are examples of effective and engaging compliance training you’ve had (if any)? What should the creators of these trainings know?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Bill for Being Wrongly Told I was In Network

Hi! About a year ago I had my wisdom teeth removed. I was told by the Orthodontist office I got referred to that my plan was in-network, only to receive a bill 9 months later for an extra $500 on top of what I already paid! After speaking with my insurance provider and with the orthodontist's office, I found out that my plan is actually out of network. Do I have to pay this bill even though they wrongly told me I was in-network?? And if so, do I have any legal protection to mitigate the bill? I think they already wrote off about $1,700 but this still doesn't seem fair at all.

Would a doctor be allowed to post a fake test result on MyChart so that the patient can’t see a bad result until their scheduled appointment that was made to talk about the results?

I’m just wondering how that works. It’s required from the clinic( that ONLY TESTS for that genetic disease) that a patient has to have an appointment to see the results (no matter if negative or positive) because of the high suicide rate with positive results. If the results come thru in MyChart, before the scheduled result reveal appt date, would they be accurate? Wouldn’t the doctor/lab have to put fake results so as to not get in trouble for the requirement of face to face results if the results would be bad? The results are in pdf form (like looking at a printed sheet of paper). The doctor was contacted but no return called received yet. They show beginning signs of the disease and have a high % of people in family with it.

blood test direct cost versus going through insurance

Are blood tests are cheaper going through insurance (thyroid comprehensive panel) versus paying directly to a company like walk-in labs ? how different are the prices ?

Baobabs are sometimes called the "tree of life" with their thick trunks, crown of branches and flowers that only open at twilight. But theories about their geographic origin was divided among three places: the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, the Kimberley region of western Australia and the dry forests of the island nation of Madagascar. Are doctors trained to shove tests down your throat?

It feels like 1 giant scam. I went to the urgent care a few months ago because I had real bad digestive symptoms (I'll spare the details.) It turned out to be a campylobacter infection. The process of making that diagnosis was so, so unnecessary. I'm not gonna describe the whole visit, but they kept throwing tests at me left and right.

Lady doctor thought I had appendicitis solely because she rammed her fingers into my abdomen and it caused some mild discomfort and that caused her to dish out a cascade of tests which all came back to show nothing.

If a doctor orders a test out of concern and it comes back negative, the patient should not be responsible to pay for it.

2500 dollars for that pathetic visit which could have been done for a couple hundred bucks tops. Screw that place. I fought with insurance for a while and they got it down to 700 thankfully.

I hope that doctor gets scammed like I did one day.

I work in inventory logistics in a big hospital. Well, I work in the bottom floor in a centralized space, and while delivering supplies, got referred to as “the bottom”

Someone was telling a PCT “You can be nice to the bottom if you want, but you don’t have to.”
