For decades, researchers have said that our mammalian ancestors were solitary but a new analysis turns that thinking on its head, suggesting they were far more sociable than was previously thought.

Two days ago, my father received mail from our insurance company about the medication that's being covered by insurance. I was able to discreetly seek psychiatry services and buy medication at my pharmacy, but this mail got to me. I just got a 90 day fill for lexapro a couple weeks ago, but my father demanded it and took it from me. It wasn't any use explaining to him why I needed it; he just took it. I hate the side effects of lexapro, but I need it to function when school starts.
What do I do from here? I just registered for USPS' informed delivery to be alerted of any incoming mail. Should I ask for another refill and buy the lexapro under the insurance or pay out of pocket? I don't really mind doing that -- I have a job now, I just don't want my parents finding out that I'm taking any prescribed medication.
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has advice about potential career paths. I graduated last year with my B.S. in Biological Sciences with experience in various laboratories and working as a marine science research assistant. But I’m having trouble finding jobs in these fields that pay well. I am now considering working in healthcare, so is there any career path I can pursue with my bachelors degree? I’m willing to take a few years of classes or certifications but I don’t have much in my savings right now, so ideally for something entry-level, where could I start?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Hello everyone, I'm not quite sure where the best place is to ask this question, so I thought I'd give it a shot here. Recently, my 4.5-year-old son had a sick visit due to URI symptoms. During the appointment, the medical staff attempted to administer a nebulizer treatment, but my son declined due to fear of the loud box and mask (it was his first time).
Despite him not actually receiving the nebulizer treatment, we were charged for it, and the physician's notes indicate that it was administered with specific medications. The notes read, "received neb rx here with alb and bud and sent home on that, reck prn neb here helped cond-".
Since my son didn't receive the nebulizer treatment, there was no improvement in his condition, making the information in the notes incorrect. My question is, should we be charged for a treatment that our son declined? Additionally, is it appropriate to request the doctor to update the notes to accurately reflect what happened during the visit?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I’m 25 years old male, 145lbs and 5’8 ft, I smoke and drink occasionally. For 4 years I’ve been experiencing burning, numbness, tingling and weakness in my whole body but more in my legs and feet, and constant anxiety and dissociation. Anyone here can relate and is it possible to become normal again ? I’ve done brain MRI and lumbar MRI they’re both normal, I’m not diabetic. I have history of panic attacks since I was 13, and my father has Parkinsons. Any genius here that can give some explanation.
I am taking care of this one patient. I’m concerned some of her behavior might be signs of mental illness.
It’s odd behavior to me. I’m not different looking. Normal, no tattoos, no piercings, no crazy hair all natural colors. I don’t understand what she’s looking at me for.
Is this normal? I’ve never dealt with a patient like this.
I want to give a patient a card but I’m not sure if that’s allowed. I know that the giving and receiving of items can be murky-but this seems small so is it ok?
Hello, PCT here at a State Hospital and I’ve seen patients range from TBIs, to Psych patients on my floor. Been working on a Cardiovascular Med Surge floor for about a year and i’ve never encountered someone like this. I’m hour 7 outta 12 and this patient who is early 70s calls me 3 times every hour to hold the urinal for him and he pees 200ml. He once asked me if I, “Am taking care of someone more critical than him because I’m ignoring him.” Condom Cath is not an option because he is a turtle, and he says he “cannot see” the urinal. I had a conversation with him to see if he could maybe try and feel the urinal and guide in, but he told me he wasn’t willing to try. Is there any tips or tricks that anybody has? I’m at my wits ends and I want this abuse to end for me and future techs. I’m ready to just put a bowl inside his brief.

The pharmacy for the residential facility my child is at has called from various personal cell phone numbers and asked for my payment info for a copay which I already provided in the docusign for this purpose. I’ve verified via phone with the facility number that there is a copay needed. I’ve asked for a bill or in writing the amount to be paid because my child’s been in care for a year at different facilities and none of them have called from personal cell phones or refused to let me pay via online portals which their own pharmacy website advertises. They’ve thus far not sent me a bill or requested in writing, instead they’ve escalated on their end with supervisors calling me saying to pay. Is this normal? It isn’t in my experience with 3 other facilities.
I'm at that point in my life where I really wanna learn these things, and am open to learning to them, but where do I start? Generally speaking.
I had appealed my eligiblity results and won my appeal. However, nothing showed up on the portal. I was going through my notices and realized the latest eligibilty notice had a different account number but the MARKETPLACE ID is the same.
I don't understand how this happened. Should I go ahead and just create a new login for this account number?
P.S The NYSOH customer service is closed for the next few days so I can't call them for assistance.
I just traveled to my family’s house for Christmas and accidentally left my medication at home. Is there anything I can do to get a prescription quickly? My doctors office is closed. (It’s guanfacine er (not a controlled substance))
I have a high deductible plan with a a $7000 family deductible. So say I have a bill for $5000 and my insurance says they will pay $3000 leaving my responsibility $1000.
So is $5k or $1K counted towards my deductible? And if it’s what I owe (1K) how is it calculated if I negotiate the price down, does the amount toward deductible change or is it still 1K? I can’t find anything online explaining this and I get different answers from my insurance provider.
The healthcare system is set up to suck every last penny out of you before you die. I’m taking care of my mom. She lives in an assisted living facility. Her annual income is about $150k and she is coming up short on cash to meet her needs. It’s insane between rent ($6.5k/month), care needs ($2.8k/month), and an aide $5.0k month) I’m still kicking in about $11.0k a year to sustain her.
The saddest part is she is not really enjoying any kind of quality of life. Just existing till she dies.
I (26F) am picking my first Adult Dental plan in Michigan, I have a Healthcare plan that goes into effect on February 1st, but the problem I'm facing is trying to pick a dental plan (the health plan I have doesn't cover any dental) while taking into account I need to have at LEAST one of my upper wisdom teeth pulled due to the jagged broken sections and the intense pain it causes the exposed nerves and shredded cheek. A lot of the plans go into detail about only covering 50% of Intentional extractions, and then 100% of one Emergency extraction once a year.
I do not know what to pick, what to look for or avoid, or what plan is best in this situation. I just went through a divorce and I'm barely making ends meet as it is, I have to be careful about costs.. if anyone has any preferred plan that they think might be best, PLEASE share it!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Right now, our system is highly convoluted and complicated. It is hard to find a family physician covered by your insurance. Furthermore, it is hard to find one where you can get an appointment within 2 months. Lastly, getting a specialist appointment for pressing medical issues can take 3 months or more.
This system also places an emphasis on treating symptoms, rather than treating the illness itself. This is because the system is based on a for profit model, and providers simply make much more off of continuously treating symptoms. Once a root illness is discovered, the symptoms will likely disappear. I have written a description of what our goals should be for healthcare reform.
They are:
· Finding primary care physician/family doctor covered by your insurance should be easy
· Getting a primary care/family doctor appointment should take no longer than 2 weeks.
· Getting a specialist appointment should take no longer than one month.
· Before providers begin providing care, they should know which services are not covered by your insurance. They should ask for your consent before performing procedures that your insurance wont cover
The healthcare system should be reoriented to focus on diagnosing and treating root illnesses, not continuous appeasing of symptoms. We will likely have to tinker with the current for profit model to achieve this goal. Furthermore, access to healthcare should be tripled from its current state to meet the above goals. These goals and reforms should serve to make the US healthcare system a preventative care one, not a reactionary care system. The lack of routine access to healthcare forces the average person to wait until their problems become serious enough that they need to seek immediate medical care. More accessible preventative care would increase the health of our nation by preventing medical conditions from reaching this point.

Hi r/healthcare
My name is Christopher.
I was wondering if I could post a survey here about healthcare?
It's for a personal project for my UX portfolio, specific to an insurance provider's app usability.
If I can post it here, sweet. If NOT, is there a better Healthcare / Health Insurance subreddit for this?

I need a Vivos implant to treat my sleep apnea and I can only find American providers ATM (still a new procedure). I like across the pond (Israel) and wonder if some states are better than others in affordability & quality with regards to dental care.
Hi, all! My fiance and I had a symbolic wedding ceremony in Mexico this weekend. We want to get married legally here in the states, however I cannot afford to have him on my insurance at work. To add him, it would be about half of my check just for the premium. He’s a full time student, getting his masters in nursing, so right now he does receive Medicaid. I’m on a high deductible ($6k) healthcare plan through my work. I make $25/hour and it’s just us two and I’m the sole provider while he’s in school. Does anyone have any insight into if he’s able to keep a Medicaid plan even at a reduced rate? Thank you for any help, advice, or insight.
Currently have Blue Shield of California PPO (individual). Coverage is fine, premiums are absurd, and this year premiums are increasing by about $100/month. This leaves me feeling like I may need to switch to an HMO.
In the process of figuring out what I lose in an HMO to justify the more than $200 reduction in monthly premium, one obvious point is that they want to route more coverage through your PCP to limit unnecessary specialist fees.
But I was curious what causes doctors to not want to accept HMOs (because those in network with the HMO are far fewer than those I could see through the PPO). I heard that HMOs pay a flat rate per visit, while PPOs pay depending on what is done by the doctor. Is this the case?
Does this mean something like the HMO and PPO might pay the same amount for a consult, but the doctor will get no added compensation for performing a procedure at the appointment? Wouldn’t that disincentivize a doctor for providing more than the absoute minimal of care he/she can get away with?
I’m also wondering when it comes to therapists: Do HMOs and PPOs pay the same in that case? As far as I’m aware they are both on the same Magellan Health network and an hour of talking is an hour of talking one way or the other.
How are doctors allowed to discriminate against people on Medicare? We paid into the system our whole lives, and have a right to healthcare in retirement. Doctors take an oath to do no harm, and the government should revoke their licenses if they refuse to treat everyone.
My wife and I are relatively healthy with two healthy children and are being squeezed financially just to have a high deductible insurance plan. (Upstate NY, USA) I do not see how this system can work for much of anybody, and any time I try to talk about it I hear extremely partisan takes. (It’s the dems fault, it’s the republicans fault, etc) I’m just trying to start a conversation of how we can fix this as a country.
Will doctors and nurses accept xmas gifts? I saw my PT and receptionist accept gifts from another woman so I know I’m safe there but I got small gifts for my primary and her nurse for everything they do and have done for me above and beyond. Is this something I can just drop off at reception or is it considered something they can’t accept and I can make an appointment to gift it to them? Any criticism or ideas welcome.
Back in the day when my father retired from the military we were given our healthcare records. A huge folder for each family member. When we arrived at the city we moved to they were given to our healthcare provider at the time. I have since moved away from that city and no longer to go that clinic. I see that they have closed since I moved away. Where would my records have gone in this situation?
We are trying to apply for health insurance as a household of 5, 3 kids and 2 adults, in Georgia. There is one working parent (no insurance through employer) making around $18,000 and the other is disabled and cannot work any longer. The disabled parent is attempting to qualify for disability, but that process will take a long time.
We applied for Medicaid and kids got peachcare but the adults were denied as their income was too high (I believe needs to be $700 a month for the household…).
We applied through the marketplace and theirincome is too low for a tax credit, so they only have full price plans available. I know Georgia has a new program Pathways, but it is strict and only available to working adults. The disabled parent who needs medical care and cannot work has no options but the marketplace plans they cannot afford. I’ve been researching solutions but cannot find much. If there is anything you would recommend or helpful info/ tips, I’d greatly appreciate it
Everyone showing up in Sponsored Results has impeccable 5 star only reviews. There's also a review removal system in place at Yelp to have negative reviews purged.
It seems like a conflict of interest to allow businesses to pay to be featured, and also have a way to remove reviews, since Yelp would be motivated to remove negative reviews for members who pay to have their business featured as Sponsored Results.
It's hard to tell when choosing an important specialist if the reviews are legitimate or not, since there's a high correlation of perfect review score and showing up in Sponsored Results.
Current MHA student completing my degree soon. I currently working as an analyst, but open to finding new opportunities upon graduation.
I saw an administrative fellowship opportunity for a major metropolitan hospital in my area and applied. They reached out to schedule an interview. It seems like a great opportunity, but I think my main concern is that it’s a 1-year fellowship.
I’m not sure if I should go through with this or not. In your opinion, is a fellowship worth it? What are some of the advantages of completing a fellowship?
How much do you hate writing SOAP notes?
If there existed a HIPAA-compliant ambient scribe that listened to patient conversations in the background and converted the conversation into SOAP notes would you use it? Assume it's fine-tuned to understand technical jargon and will accept specific formats or example SOAP notes to base its structure off of.
If you see utility in something of this nature, are there any other features that you would want this to be able to do?
Additionally, how much time do you spend writing SOAP notes currently? How much would you pay for something that wrote SOAP notes for you with little to no changes needed from your end?
Interesting initial study on virtual avatars assessing pain. I'm wondering when (or if) we will begin to see these healthcare avatars more frequently?
My pregnant wife is RH -ve and I am RH +ve. The OB wants us to take a Rhogam shot but our insurance doesn’t cover it as a prescription benefit. If the OB were to administer the shot directly it’ll be covered under medical benefit. Now, our OB doesn’t stock the medicine so I am not sure how to proceed here. Any guidance will be appreciated. Thank you.
Hello everyone, I am looking for affordable health insurance for my spouse. Some background:
I am married and I am looking for a plan for my wife. I am currently employed full time earning around $130K (gross). Wife is unemployed and we are looking for an affordable plan for her to be on. Adding her to my employer's plan will cost us an additional $800/month. CoveredCA quotes just under $500/month. I am hoping to find something a bit more affordable for her. I know $130K sounds like a lot, but we live in the bay area and I'm the only one working while she is in school. We can't really afford to spare an extra several hundred/month at this time.
Thank you
Don't know to flair tbis.
