Billing idiocy: Telling Mayo Clinic to pound sand

I had one video appointment with a Mayo Clinic specialist to get a one-off opinion on my treatment and I don't anticipate needing anything more from them. If I was uninsured or did not have out-of-network benefits, I would have gotten a self-pay discount. But I technically have out-of-network benefits but they have a completely separate deductible which I won't meet, despite meeting my max out of pocket on in-network care. So I'm essentially paying out of pocket without any adjustment. Which is stupid.

They billed $603 when the going rate seems to be $250-$300. They acknowledged that if I had told them up-front I was uninsured that I would have gotten a discount, but they refused to reprocess it that way, offering to lower it to $575. I told them I'd pay $104, bringing the balance below $500, making it unreportable to the credit agencies. She told me that was certainly an option and I made the payment.

Is there likely to be any unintended consequences? I don't really mind if I can't see them again. Am I right that this won't hurt my credit?

The skin around the top of my penis is dry and peeling!!

It could be because: 1) I had used hair shampoo accidentally as lubricant for masturbation a few days ago but I had not cleaned it with water so it may have had impact on my penis. It could be like how not putting water in your hands after applying soap can damage your skin

2) Frequent masturbation as a result of me being quite horny

3) The hot summer weather that causes overall body drought

I believe reason 1) is the most likely. Also, my penis does not hurt when peeing. What should I do? Let it heal by itself without masturbating? Go see a doctor? Is it serious?

I would be EXTREMELY GRATEFUL if anyone could help me sort this thing out!!!

Can I switch from employer to private (Covered CA) insurance before surgery?

Looking for a bit of time-sensitive guidance - any input is much appreciated.

Broke my collarbone last week. Ortho surgeon I saw that day said no surgery. Had a follow-up with a different surgeon yesterday, and he said I needed surgery. Will cost $45k total, and I'll hit my $9k out of pocket max, which is really tough for me.

I found a Covered California plan (Blue Shield CA Platinum 90 PPO) that would cut my out of pocket costs in half. It says I could be covered starting 7/1, and my surgery is scheduled for 7/6.

Can I either drop my employer insurance and buy the other plan on Covered California, or have both and opt to use the better plan? If it's allowable in general, would the surgery be covered by insurance (no prexisting condition sort of thing)? If it's allowable and could be covered, would it be a nightmare?

Thanks!

How to deal with US health provider overcharging (I'm just visiting)?

Hi, so I'm visiting the US and have been dealing with an infection. Have been to multiple urgent cares (I have travel insurance that will reimburse me later), each one cost 150USD per visit.

I was trying to get a refill on a prescription and the nurse told me to do telehealth, as it was only 25USD instead of the 150. I went on their MyChart and saw that the estimated cost was actually 60USD (and specifically stated it might be lower based on insurance, which isn't relevant, but yeah). I paid the cost, spoke with a doctor via Zoom for 12 minutes, and that was that until I just received a bill for 380USD more.

It says I had a meeting for 30-44 minutes, but that isn't true. I have the call logs to prove that it was indeed only 12 minutes.

This is a huge payment that I can't pay, even if my health insurance will reimburse me later (but even then I'm worried that they'll scrutinize that I paid for telehealth instead of just going to an urgent care). Is there any way to negotiate or lower this charge?

I understand that by saying it was "estimated" they can charge whatever they want, but since they mentioned the insurance might lower it, I couldn't have known that it would be so huge. I'm also confused as to why I am receiving a bill for 30-44 minutes, as all the doc did was call in a prescription and she did that while on the Zoom with me.

Is there any way around this or am I screwed? I grew up in the US, but have been out for most of my adult life and have no idea how any of this works, I don't know who else to ask.

Need to cancel work health plan but don't have many options. Can I get any plan and use that to remove my wife from my policy?

We can't afford the cost of our health plan right now and my job won't allow us to cancel it unless we meet certain criteria.

I can remove her from the policy though if she gets her own health coverage.

My question is, will non ACA plans meet that criteria? I'm looking at plans on healthinsurance.net that I can enroll her in outside of open enrollment.

My plan would be to use that health plan to remove her from my policy to save money and then cancel that plan.

Is this feasible?

Can anything be done if you suspect a provider did something medically unnecessary?

For the background, I've been having some gastrointestinal pain since after a bout of COVID. Went to a GI doctor and the first thing he wants to do is a Colonoscopy/EGD with no other treatment plans before this. I call the insurance company and they said it will be covered fully since it was a colonoscopy, so I'm fine with getting the procedure done even though it seems like an aggressive first step to me.

Fast forward to the bill coming: Nothing with the colonoscopy is covered because the doctor performed a biopsy. I was never even aware the biopsy was done and during the follow up the doctor said there was nothing wrong with my colon. During a phone call with the provider, they tell me the same thing, everything about the colon was "normal" and that sometimes the doctor does "random" biopsies. Not only is the colonoscopy not covered, but the pathology from the biopsy was also not covered. I feel like I went through colonoscopy TSA and came out a two-thousand-dollar loser. Still have symptoms, so do I just eat the bill and find a new provider?

Can I get additional (non Medicare) Rx insurance anywhere?

So I’m 31F and employed with pretty good Kaiser insurance (norther California). For the most part my plan is pretty good, but my doctor recently prescribed me a med that doesn’t have a generic and would run me like $900/month. I’ve been looking at coupons and GoodRx and that Mark Cuban site but the discounts are pretty negligible and/or they don’t work with Kaiser.

That got me to wondering, could I just add on more Rx coverage somehow? Like in car insurance you can add on having the insurance company pay for a rental car?

I’ve been googling around and most of the results have been for Medicare part d and stuff, but that doesn’t really apply for me. Is stand-alone additional Rx coverage a thing?

Why am I not able to switch Doctors at the same clinic?

A practitioner of mine is recommending for me to see an Endocrinologist for further analysis on some of my labs and I also have other issues I want to address.

I've gone to this Endocrinology clinic last year with a different Doctor. This time I wanted to try a new Doctor to get a second opinion and I also thought this Doctor may be a better fit for me.

I called the clinic and they told me that I can't switch Doctors, I would have to go back to my original one.

I don't understand why I can't switch?

Is there some type of policy about this?

Help with understanding cost of prenatal screening

Hello, I’m pregnant with my first child and have requested the universal panel from Myriad Genetics to screen for all kinds of rare diseases. My place of care can’t tell me any of the codes they plan to charge, but they do say I might have to pay out of pocket. I was wondering can somebody help me estimate the cost of this screening if you have experience with it? Is there anything I need to do with my insurance to make sure that I get maximum coverage and avoid any mistakes with claims and post-procedural claim headaches? Thank you in advance!

Can this price tag really be correct? In the US.

I did some research on how much a pap smear and a contraceptive implant replacement would be before I went to the ob/gyn, and the internet said a pap smear should cost $140-220 and, "insertion of implant can cost anywhere between $0 and $1,300. Implant removal can cost between $0 and $300. But the good news is that implants are totally free (or low cost) with most health insurance plans." So, in worst case $220 + $1,600. But my insurance is really good, so I figured it would be a maximum of $60.

I ended up also getting tested for STDs while I was there.

And the total price was more than $5,000??? How is this possible? Is this something I can contest? Why isn't it stated on the bill what services I actually received? Why is a "treatment room" more than $2,000? And what on earth could the "other services" of $815 be for?

I'm in Michigan, if that makes any difference.

Finding primary care provider and medication prescriber while doing temp work?

Hello, first time poster here! Let me know if my question should be on a different sub.

I recently graduated college, and my primary physician was through my university. He was also my prescriber for my antidepressants. Because I am no longer in the university's system, I am no longer able to continue seeing him. I want to find a new primary care doctor, however I am currently living in a state (Indiana) different than my home state (Missouri) for temp work. I will most likely be back in my home state once my seasonal position is over, but my plans aren't clear yet.

My question is, how do I go about finding healthcare in my current stage of life? Do I try to find someone licensed in my state, even though I won't be living here six months from now? Do I find someone licensed in my home state through my permanent address? If I do that, how will they be able to prescribe my medications while I'm out of state?

I feel like my situation is complicated, but I'm surely not the only one who has experienced it. Any advice is appreciated.

Is it normal to receive a 1500 bill for a 30 min ENT appointment?

I just received a bill from an appointment in January and I owe over a thousand dollars for a 30 minute appointment at Northwell Health in NYC. It was originally $1521 but insurance paid almost $500. I had no idea a doctor’s visit could cost so much. They did perform an endoscopy to look in my nose which I was not aware was going to happen but the majority of the cost went to the office visit itself.

I was diagnosed with sinus polyps years ago and finally decided to get a consultation for surgery. The doctor did not find any nasal polyps and suggested a CT scan instead. I ultimately decided not to get a CT scan because of how expensive it would be but am saddled with a huge bill anyways.

I already called the doctors office to dispute it and will hear back in 7 to 10 days and called my insurance but is there anything else I can do in the mean time? Is this normal?

looking for state legislative examples

Someone has been talking to me about drafting a bill to establish a process for state hospital licensing agency to be required to investigate complaints about a hospital where the complaint is about a possible violation of state licensing requirements. Currently you can send them a complaint online, but they have no legal requirement to investigate anything and they generally refer you to the Joint Commission. I think CA and MN have statutes (have seen stuff about the process on their state websites, haven't dug for actual statutes or rules yet).

If you know of a state that hasa such a law, and particularly has a robust system for handling patient complaints, I'd love to hear about it.

Would leaving a note in the emergency/personal health section of my phone that I refuse emergency medical treatment actually prevent treatment? How does my insurance have no prescription records of me if they're the ones paying?

I have Iowa Amerigroup/medicaid.

Literally all they have on file are two prescriptions I picked up since June 8th. I've had this same insurance since 2019. In the time I've had my insurance I've used at least one pharmacy and three medical supply companies that were paid through my insurance.

I contacted a pharmacy I used several months ago and they were paid for my prescriptions. I haven't had issues with getting my medication or supplies until recently. I get ostomy supplies monthly. I used to be able to get 3 bottles of deodorizer a month, but at the beginning of this year, it dropped to one.

I got an email that my monthly bottle was over limit this month, which doesn't make any sense, so I called the supply company. They said that the insurance denied it, so I called the insurance... Even though they've been paying for everything over these years, they claim they don't even cover prescriptions that come by mail and that the supply company must be covering the costs themselves... No way are they sending me over $1,500 worth of supplies every month for free.

About a month ago I called my insurance with another issue and the woman looked up my account on two different programs and they had absolutely no information of me on either.

Is it even possible for them to have completely cleared everything on my account? How the hell am I still even able to get supplies if they're acting like they're not being billed?

Is phlebotomy a dead end job and not many job opportunities?

I have been a phlebotomist for a while now (5 years). No idea if this is just me or there's any truth to it. I just feel like there's not many job opportunities as a phleb. There's not too many labs to apply to; and there's lots of hospitals but that's if hospital even interviews you (lucky to get interview), let alone hire you. And it seems as though the main labs (LabCorp and Quest) I can't even get interview. In 5 years I had 2 jobs, both labs and it was whatever is considered below LabCorp & Quest. And the pay is low, but where I'm at now pays most and that includes hospitals in my area (they post in description a range a d it's still higher). Still low pay but better than most places.

As many as 8 in 10 older Americans couldn’t afford more than four years in an assisted living facility or two years in a nursing home, according to a 2023 analysis by the National Council on Aging and the LeadingAge LTSS Center u/UMass Boston.

This is particularly hard for people in the monetary middle, defined by Pew Research Center as “those with an annual household income of about $52,000 to $156,000 annually in 2020 dollars for a household of three.” They don’t have enough to pay for long-term care, but they have too many assets to qualify for government assistance. Medicare also doesn’t cover long-term care. What are the options for the 47 million households with older adults who will face this scenario?
