CVS sending me SMS texts advertising their videos about my disease - this seems like a major privacy concern
CVS has been sending me daily texts messages saying "you are invited to watch a video about [DISEASE]" with my diagnosed illness in plain text where I redacted it for this post. These show up on my lock screen. Most healthcare providers will send a message to notify me and redirect to a secure portal with some way of verifying my identity, or if they call will ask to confirm it's me with my birthdate or something. CVS is just sending SMS in plain text about it, unsolicited. Is this legal? I really don't want the risk of someone seeing my diagnosis, it's a private matter. I just blocked the number they're coming from for now, but I'm afraid they'll send more from a different number. Is this illegal? Seems like it violates some sort of healthcare privacy laws.
Would a Medicare supplemental insurance salesman be able to access my medical record.
I had just become eligible for Medicare and my insurance salesman was having problems answering rather simple questions. I had never met him face-to-face and only by phone. He sounded like he was getting quite exasperated. He then said, "you know we can see if you are following the doctor's instructions and treatments."
I immediately told him to shred my application for insurance.
What happens if your coverage cycle reseets while there is an unpaid/partially paid bill ?
Lets say, I have a bill of $1000 from this April, and have agreed with the hospital that I'd pay in 5 monthly no interest installment. Assume that I have already met my deductible and every bill has been going to coinsurance by the time I got the service in April, but my insurance coverage resets in July. Two questions here:
1) Will they recalculate my bill and charge me whole lot more money?
2) After the coverage resets, where does the remaining bill payment goes? Does it go to deductible, or does it go to coinsurance?
Frustrated
It seems like all they teach doctors is to tell you its nothing..... I dont even wanna see a doctor anymore. Dont wanna wait at emergency for 12 to 16 hours for them to say its nothing. Just pray to God and hope it will be ok
For contexf, I am not just talking about ER doctors. I have seen my family doctor who told me its just stress. Ive been referred to an ENT doctor who told me its nothing. Ive been to cardiologist...... again nothing. I have so many wierd symptoms and after one or two tests they tell me its nothing.....

Why is it so difficult to confirm provider coverage?
I’ve got a job offer with a company that has Blue Cross Blue Shield Illinois. I live in a major Wisconsin city. My healthcare provider group is associated with a major University and for my purposes currently, everything is considered in network as long as I’m at one of their clinics, regardless of doctor.
In talking with the insurance provider for the potential employer, they’ve confirmed coverage of some of my specific doctors by NPI, but others they say are out of network, even though the are in the under the same provider group as the ones they said were.
In talking with the billing department for the provider group, they said if one doctor is covered all doctors would be covered because they do all or none contracts. Obviously this is in direct contrast with what the insurance said.
Now when I asked the insurance for the coverage of the provider group by their NPI, they indicated the provider group is in network but, again, contrasts statements that some doctors under the provider group are not covered. Further, even though the provider group is in network, my specific clinic address was listed as out of network.
Is there any way to confirm coverage without actually enrolling first? I keep getting contradictory information and am not in a place to switch medical providers at this time?

A place to upload payment data from EOBs?
Reading through my EOBs recently has made me very angry about the state of American Healthcare. I'm decently insured so I'm not put out when a hospital charges $18,000 and receives $1700 from me and my insurance company, but this information needs to be made public so uninsured and self-payers know what the going rate is when they are privately negotiating (or, even better, suing a hospital).
Is there a place online where I can go through all my old EOBs to upload the dates, providers, CPT codes, and "discounts" or payouts for services? Medical providers may have signed a non-disclosure about this stuff, but I haven't and I want to help others.

Should other first-world countries subsidize U.S. healthcare?
As an American, I know our system is messed up. With that said, it kind of irks me when other countries tout their free or extremely low cost systems. The reason it irks me is because of how much money and effort the US puts into developing innovative treatments, drugs, and medical devices. The few, dated, articles I could find on drug development by country said the US develops around 40%-50% of the drugs that go to market each year. It really sucks having to pay exorbitant amounts for our healthcare, but it really sucks having to hear about how awful our system is while they're using our research. I know this is a selfish way to look at this issue because the US does help underdeveloped countries reach a level of basic care through those developments, but what would happen if the US put in stricter laws surrounding intellectual property and forced other first world countries to pay for the research and development the US produces?
*NOTE: I don't work in healthcare and I have zero clue how insurance in the US actually works*

‘Everyone gets away with it because there isn’t accountability’: Boston center launches new plan to reduce medical errors
From Globe.com:
Nearly 30 years after Betsy Lehman died from an accidental overdose of chemotherapy drugs, Massachusetts facilities are still grappling with the issue of medical errors.
On Wednesday, the center formed in her name, in collaboration with a consortium of health care experts and industry groups, launched a new road map to educate and hold accountable all those involved in the state’s health care system. The recommendations include the establishment of a statewide program of health care safety education and training for all staff and administrators, including front-line workers; boosting patient and family engagement in safety improvements; and streamlining and coordinating the various state systems that track safety data to reduce duplication and information gaps.
Despite some strides, progress has been slow. In 2019, one in five Massachusetts residents experienced a medical error in their own care or in the care of a household or close family member.
A 2019 report by the Lehman center found that in a typical year, there were 62,000 cases of preventable harm to Massachusetts patients, resulting in $617 million in excess health insurance claims. Additionally, a study published in 2023 in the New England Journal of Medicine looking at 2018 data from 11 Massachusetts hospitals found that 7 percent of all patient admissions involved a preventable adverse event related to medication, surgery, or health care associated infections.
The pandemic has worsened many metrics of patient safety, with higher rates of health care associated infections, falls, and pressure ulcers.
The data, however, only reflect incidents in places that are tracked. There are a number of settings — such as physician’s offices — that do not collect safety data and have very few requirements to report safety events.

Transforming Healthcare with AI: The New Era of Medical Technology
Right now I’m paying for my healthcare with my premium tax credit. Might be getting a change in income that will potentially disqualify me. Can I keep my marketplace insurance and just pay full price?
What I’m worried about is next week I am supposed to start a medication for a chronic illness that is 11,000 a bottle without insurance. Right now I’m paying like 50 bucks for insurance, and the tax credit is paying about 350. If I am no longer eligible for the premium tax credit next month, can I still pay full price on my insurance in order to get next months bottle (the treatment requires 2 months consistent dosing). I’m just afraid to stop the meds halfway through, totally lose my insurance, and be unable to afford to finish treatment. With my insurance, currently I’d only be paying 5 bucks for the pills.

Leaving Healthcare???
Hey everyone…. I am STRESSED beyond belief right now because I have decided to leave healthcare.
I am a young guy, 24, and have been in healthcare full time since I was 18! That’s not very long, nor is it a very large age, but I am so burnt out I can’t even function some days.
I know most healthcare workers understand what it’s like to be burnt out…. But it broke me finally. My mental health, physical health, spiritual and emotional health all took a huge hit and I am suffering.
The environment I am in is incredibly negative too, and the staff around me are not only negative but actual bullies, and I have been harassed and low key bullied more then I have ever experienced in any of my schooling growing up.
I need a break and need a change. If I come back…. I come back. But I am so burnt out and so effected by my experiences I need to do something else for awhile.
This is incredibly scary because I have never done ANY other work (officially anyways) other than healthcare…. I don’t even know where to begin or what direction to head in. I am feeling lost and confused but know it’s for my own well being I step any…..
Can anyone else relate?

The patients who regret laser eye surgery: ‘My life’s stood still since then’
Laid off, on unemployment, qualify for Obamacare subsidy. Question.
To start, I can't afford COBRA from my previous employer. It is $880 a month. So I went on healthcare.gov.
According to healthcare.gov, I qualify for $262 per month as an Obamacare subsidy. I found a gold plan I want on the exchange that costs me $170 a month after the subsidy. Do I understand it right that I pay what healthcare.gov quotes as my price and the gov pays the insurance company whatever the subsidy quoted is directly?
Is it easy to cancel Obamacare plans? Hoping to not need it for more than a couple of months.

How can my uninsured severe narcoleptic afford Xyrem at over $6000 a bottle?
My girlfriend has narcolepsy w/ severe cataplexy. She has been officially diagnosed, she's run the guantlet of sleep studies and tried multiple prescribed medications that all of which don't really work. The most directly helpful has been Adderall but it's so goddamn impossible to find now, doctors are prescribing Ritalin as a replacement. What she really needs though is Xyrem but doctors aren't prescribing it purely because they want to avoid te cost because she's uninsured because her narcolepsy won't let her hold down a job! She can barely function on any regular schedule.
I am not asking for personal medical advice, I am asking how is anyone supposed to afford Xyrem - a life-saving effective treatment for narcolepsy according to the FDA - at over $6000 per 180 mL when the disease it helps cure is directly preventing the flow of financial income?
This is tearing her apart, every day we wait for a day some greedy pharmaceutical company decides to not charge a small salary for life-saving medication. There's a real argument to be made about whether a life is worth living of they can just never afford the medicine that enables them to live a normal life. We are really struggling here.
Has anyone had any experience being able to get this price reduced without employer-provided insurance?

How to get help covering medical costs.
If this is more suited for a different sub, please let me know.
I am located in the US.
I have been receiving pelvic floor physical therapy since the end of February. Unfortunately, this is not covered by my insurance since the specific PT place I am going to is out of network (after visiting someone in network 3 times, and determining that they don’t staff anyone with the experience needed).
There are some payment adjustments made, so I’m not being charged the full amount, but it’s still a lot of money ($150-$200/week). This is on top of additional medical expenses.
I applied for financial assistance through the hospital, to help with my other costs, and I was denied as my income is well over the limit.
I am a single person, living alone, with a single income, so even with a higher income my cost of living is higher than most people who live with roommates or partners where there are multiple sources of income in one household.
I’m really worried about not being able to pay this or having to put it on a credit card entirely, and I’m not sure what resources are available to me. The specific place I am going to does not have any assistance programs and does not offer any payment plans.
I’m not yet in a good or a much improved place, and I might make my next appointment my last as I’m not seeing much progress in my condition, but I’m not sure what to do about the payments I now owe.

People in America, what sort of problems are there getting treatment when you are a non native English speaker?
Im researching medical interpreters and issues ESL patients in face in the American medical system for a project currently. I've done some interviews with people in my area about the difficulty in getting a medical interpreter, cultural misunderstandings when talking to doctors about diet, as well as the strain it can put on children who have to make appointments, deal with insurance, and translate at the doctor's office for older immigrant family members. I was wondering what patients and healthcare workers struggle with when dealing with a language/cultural barrier, what they do to deal with this issue, and how big of a problem is it really.

Referral keeps going to wrong places
My PCP recommended an MRI, and I gave her the address of specific location that had the lowest possible cost around my area. It took me about 10 days to get the referral letter but it was sent to a different location that is 160 dollar more expensive after insurance. I called the referral coordinator, and I just got a "fixed" referral , but now it's even farther and 200 dollar more expensive. What the fuck? Icalled the coordinator again and she told me that "it takes time to get it corrected because a pre-certification often sends to wrong place." Does it make any sense to you guys? Help? Trying to find resources to help sick mom
Hello,
Im not sure if this is the right subreddit to post to but Im looking for some advice. My mother (65f) had a brain aneurysm late last year, in Canada and I've been struggling to find resources to find her some help and support.
She is a resident of Ontario and we do have PSWs come in for 1 hour a day for 3 days a week. Right now the bulk of the work lies with me, but unfortunately I work most days and cannot afford to be home with her more than I already am. I do have a sibling stating with hee to try his best and keep an eye on her, but he is currently suffering from chronic deprssion, and the meds he is currently on leave him in an almost zombie like state.
She seems physically okay, but her full strength hasn't come back and it seeks like she has delerium. She slips in and out of consciousness. Im looking for help finding out if i could get anymore support for her, whether it be resources for more care or even mental health resources because I get the feeling that the event has been so traumatic, she's now slipping into a depression.
I've been struggling to even figure out what I should be looking for in terms of support so if anyone can offer even the tinest amount of guidance, please help! Any advice is appreciated
