[Question - Insurance] Can my wife use my HSA?

Next year my wife and I will be on separate plans. She will be on a PPO eligible for FSA while the kids and I will be on an HDHP HSA eligible plan. She will not contribute to her FSA. I want to fully contribute to the family HSA. Can my wife then use the funds in the HSA? What about if it's a previously owned HSA?

Tumeric - a Possible Relief Option for COVID-19 Suvivor's Symptoms [Discussion]

First I wanna say I am not a doctor so take my experience and advice with a grain of salt.

With that being said, I had contracted covid 19 earlier this year in January and had been sick for almost 2 months afterward, with lingering effects for the past 6 months almost. Which included: shortness of breath, unable to take full breaths, persistent minor headaches, hard mucus build-up, and internal inflammation of the digestive track which caused a "full stomach" feeling and acid reflux, as well as constipation worse than I am used to with my already present IBS. I also was having insomnia and chronic fatigue because of the lack of oxygen my body was facing post-COVID-19. That being said I have been trying to take it's been trying to take Mucinex All (this form has an expectorant inside it's formula) on and off since I got covid to try and lessen the mucus build-up and other effects. But it still didn't help ease any of my symptoms.

I've recently been paying attention to the medical research journals online that have been stating a correlation between tumeric and helping ease is ease the lingering symptoms survivors of covid were still facing. I've been doing some of my own research on the Anti-inflammatory properties tumeric has it's tumeric has as well as boswellia serrata a root extract and it seems to be helping survivors of covid with Anti-inflammatory results within the digestive tract and other parts of their body. So naturally I tried and experimented on myself with it. This part is where you would need to speak with your doctor 1st they're 1st because I am not a doctor but I will share my experience with you.

I started taking a tumeric supplement with the following ingredients inside each capsule: Turmeric Root Powder (1,050 mg), Turmeric 95% Root Extract (150 mg), Boswellia Serrata Extract (250 mg), Vegetable Cellulose (vegetable capsule).

I took only 1 per day (even though it was recommended to take 2 per day) because I wanted to see what effect only one capsule per day would have on my already stressed out body. After the first night, I took my first full breath in 6 months. After the first 3 days, I was sleeping peacefully again. After my first week, my energy levels returned to about half what I remember them to be at. I'm currently on my second week and still taking one a day for now. And I am feeling more like myself with higher energy levels, more oxygen getting into my body - I can tell because I am able to sleep in deep REM sleep and the whites of my eyes are now clear white once again, instead of yellow with black dark circles under my eyes. My nails are also light pink, whereas they were looking a bit dark before trying the Tumeric supplement.

It should be said once again, I am not a doctor and I am not a naturalist who only believes supplements of the Earth is all there is for curing diseases - nothing against them. But I stated above I also take modern medicine to help combat health issues, so in me sharing my experience with a natural supplement/substance, it is to help bring awareness to everyone else that might have been suffering like I was before I ventured out and tried something alternative to modern medicine to help relieve my symptoms. The Tumeric has helped me greatly and I feel better taking it. It should be said, that it is not a cure and it should only be for short-term use only. But in the medical research journals that I've read through and the medical studies I've seen online, it has shown that Tumeric is helping relieve symptoms of COVID-19 for both survivors and for those who have been hospitalized for contracting the virus.

Whatever you take away from my experince with Tumeric, I hope your symptoms ease and cease eventually. I hope everyone stays safe out there and is able to feel healthy and more like themselves once again.

My one tip, should you choose to go and try taking Tumeric supplements, pair it together with probiotics to help stabilize your gut lining with good bacteria once again.

Best wishes to everyone 😊

[Question - Insurance] Void claim and switch to self-pay

Hi. We have a patient with high deductible plan at our office, we filed the claim to his insurance and it came back with very high patients responsibility. Our self-pay rates are lower that his deductible for the date of service. He wants us to switch him to self-pay. Is it allowed to void the claim and have patient pay out-of-pocket instead, if the claim has already been processed?

[Question - Insurance] Kaiser Permanente psychiatry has turned me away?

I live in California. I’ve been seeing my current psychiatrist (probably once every three months) for severe and debilitating anxiety for over a year and he prescribes me medications. Last month I had sort of a suicidal episode and my mother called Kaiser asking for their help. They had a therapist call me on the phone and talk to me for a while.

Later that month, I got a call from an employee in the psychiatry department. She informed me that due to the severity of my psychiatric symptoms, it’s not in their contract with the state (I have Kaiser through state healthcare) to treat me anymore and that I’ll get charged out of pocket if I continue seeing my doctor. She suggested other mental facilities for me to go to and said that I have to get medications prescribed from them now.

I got another phone call since then saying the same thing, so I made an appointment with their recommended county facility and had an awful experience with their psychiatrist. He also flat out refused to continue my current medication (0.5 MG of Klonopin once per day) under any circumstance. They even surprise drug tested me (100% clean) and treated me like I was a recovering drug addict there on court order.

Is it normal for Kaiser to literally turn a patient away because they deem your symptoms too severe…? I’m honestly devastated.

[QUESTION - INSURANCE] Do I understand this correctly about health insurance?

So there is Premium, Deductible, Max out of pocket, coinsurance, and doctor visit copay.

.

PREMIUM is how much I pay per month, regardless if I seek any medical attention or not.

DEDUCTIBLE is how much I have to pay before the insurance company steps in and helps.

COINSURANCE is what % I have to pay (past my deductible)

MAX OUT OF POCKET is how much the I have to pay before I don't pay anymore and then the insurance company completely steps in and covers it all.

Doctor visit copay is the reduced rate of the visit, and will count towards my deductible.

Is this correct or am I missing anything?

.

Context: I'm self employed, 30, state of Hawaii, and looking into (private?) insurance. I lead a pretty healthy lifestyle, but anything can happen so I'd like to be ready. Also starting a family in the next few years, so I figure the cost of having a kid uninsured could easily cost as much as a couple years of just having insurance.

Currently I'm looking at the silver plan for HMSA, the most widely used and stable company in hawaii.

Please share any detail I should probably know. Thank you so much!

[Question - Other] Medical Group as PCP

I just got my first real adult job after graduating recently, which includes medical benefits! It's through UHC and I'm going through their website to choose a primary care provider. It lists things I've heard of like General Practitioner, Family Care Doctor, and Internist, but it also lists a "Primary Care Medical Group" as an option. Is that just having a primary care provider that's a group rather than one individual doctor, so it might not be the same doctor you see every time? Does anyone know if they're better/worse than a GP?

(For reference, my wife and I are 23 and 22 respectively, don't plan on having kids soon, and will probably only be living in this area for another 2 years while she finishes grad school)

[QUESTION - INSURANCE] Am I entitled to a refund under the 100% COBRA subsity available due to the ARPA?

I opted for coverage on April 27th 2021 which went into affect on the 30th if that month. I've been fighting my employer for a refund ever since.

At the time, their site had not yet been updated to reflect the 100% subsidy but I had until end of April to enroll. I was told I'd be refunded at a later date. My coverage was initially supposed to start March 2021. The site made me pay for both March and April in order to get coverage.

My company's terms state that "the new election would be prospective from April 1st, 2021, only, without needing to elect and pay retroactive to the date coverage was lost or discontinued." I interpreted this as I should have not been forced to pay for March. Initially, they told me in May that I'd be refunded for both months. At the end of June, I was told that I would only be partially refunded for March. Today, I was told I wouldn't be refunded for March at all.

According to the terms linked here, do you think I'm eligible for a full March 2021 refund? I've been having a lot of issues since opting in almost 3 months ago. Each month cost me over $360.

Communication with my old work place has been difficult as this department only has an email contact. I cannot call them.

[Question - Insurance] Why did my 10 minute ER visit cost 90$ with health insurance.

I went to the doctor because I though my heart rate was high, I was around 90 BPMs when resting which basically made me uneasy. They just claimed it to be anxiety, in my opinion it probably is some sort of sugar or food intolerance increasing heart rate, or lack of exercise. I waited in the room for like 20 minutes, they signed me in which I assume should only cost like 10$ it only took like 5 minutes to do, then I got into the actual room. They basically put a heart monitor on me, and took it. That was it, no blood work, nothing at all. They told me it was fine and I probably had anxiety (which again was wrong), and then I left, took like 10 minutes in the actual room with 2 people actually talking to me (nurses of course). Then I saw the bill and it was 90$, with insurance. How can that even be 90$ WITH insurance, that is absurd. Literally anyone could have done there job, they didn't give me any treatment, any helpful advice, or anything at all just checked my heart rate which my phone could already do! I could have gotten the same results just by asking a friend to test my heart rate for free.

And again 90$ with insurance, so I probably paid EVEN more for that shit. How could it be this expensive?

I am always fascinated about how we as human beings are able to open up complex organs like brain, heart , kidney and many other organs . I consider Neurosurgeons to be badass doctors who knows how the most complex organ the human brain works and they can navigate there patient's brains to save them from life threatening situations but I am always curious about how they conquer there fear and how there day to day life goes ?

[Question - Other] Can We as A Society Implement Mandatory Vaccination for COVID-19 for Most People Given the Dire World Situation Right now?

If you go out to the Harvard, T.H. Chan, School of Public Health site, you will see a long list of articles outlining the rising risk of COVID-19 Break Out Infections due to the low vaccination rate.

Refer to https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/the-latest-on-the-coronavirus/

What is the ethics of putting those of us who got the vaccination at increased risk so as to allow people the freedom to do what they want? How can masks and lockdowns be mandated on the one hand and then vaccination never mandated due to a freedom of choice issue? Why is the freedom to decide to accept or reject the vaccine a given when the freedom to move about and live as normal human beings can be abridged at will? How do we balance these competing mandates? Obviously there must always be exceptions for any mandate to vaccinate due to other health issues involved. Refer to https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/is-the-covid19-vaccine-safe

However, what do the medical ethicists say about this quandary? I do not have the answer but I feel that we need real experts and real people on both sides to state their case because this has very serious life, freedom and health impacts for all of us across the planet. Decisions cannot responsibly be made based on tribal affiliation. Real debate and consensus is needed now. I have malice towards no person but I would like to see an honest and well thought out debate on this very serious topic.

So, I'd like to know what are the best guidance/guidelines you know of.

One of the things we are concerned is about better ventilation for some rooms and avoiding auditoriums' use for now, for example.

Also. N95 masks will be provided for all the staff members.

As examples, I found some interesting bits on the following links:

My city stats:
7.398,26 inhab/km²
12.325.232 inhabtants
12000 COVID-19 new cases per day

Any tip/suggestion/link will be very welcome.

[Question - other] nervous about ears.

5’4 98 lbs Male

I play the violin and piano and I’m really nervous because I’ve been practicing and getting ear pain/light ringing (ringing is barely noticeable sometimes idk if it even is ringing) also - it feels like my ears are constantly popping.

Today in the shower I closed my eyes and it felt like I was swaying back and forth. It was so weird. I’m really nervous I could’ve caused some permanent damage. I went to the ear doctor 8 months ago with similar complaints (no swaying tho) and they did a bunch of checkups and said everything was fine. I’m still having anxiety like what if it’s worse now and there’s actually a problem since I haven’t gone back in so long? Also what is with this swaying sensation? Maybe I’m just dehydrated?

I’ve felt super foggy the past few days. I’ve been staying up until 2:00 and getting up at 11:00. I don’t have any plans until the end of the week.

[Question-Insurance] Need help choosing the right plan for pregnancy (USA).

Hi all,

So, my current partner is pregnant. Her current plan is a bit low-cost in the front end but after some info we found out the total of the pre-natal care would come up to around $7,500.00 out of own pocket.

Thankfully, we can switch plans due to the special window. So there’s two plans we are eyeballing. These are:

Plan 1: Premium: $61.81 Deductible: $675 individual / $1,350 family. OOP Max: $675 individual / $1,350 family. Coinsurance: N/A.

Plan 2: Premium: $64.00 Deductible: $0 OOP Max: $1,075 individual / $2,150 family. Coinsurance: mostly 25% on services.

Obviously, we want to save some money but the most important thing is to have my partner and baby covered.

Any help in this matter will be appreciated.

[Question - Other] How to Report Ex-Boss for Harming Patients?

If there is a better sub for this, please let me know. The admin sub seemed small. I also apologize for the vagueness, but I don’t want to identify the organization or doxx myself.

I worked in an an office/receptionist role for a medical conglomerate. Before firing me, my ex-boss ordered me to to take actions that harmed multiple patients by delaying care. These processes were also in direct opposition to the requests I received from the doctors we supposedly served. Through conversations with former coworkers, I learned that she has also terminated others with more experience in the past who did not fall in line with her policies.

This isn’t about getting revenge or getting my job back (I don’t want it). I just want to notify someone higher up in the chain of command that they have someone in charge who is harming patients and potentially violating company policy.

Is there any way I can do this in a constructive manner? I have contacts inside the company still who may be able to assist. I have never worked for such an organization before and am at a loss as to where to go.

[Question - Other] Has it been shown that healthcare access and use for children and teenagers has led to better health later in life?

The question can probably be phrased better, but I am curious if healthcare access and use from the time a person is born until they are, say, 20 has been shown to provide health benefits later in life (in any way, shape, or form).

There is an intuitive sense that this should be the case, but I am curious if there have been any credible studies pointing to that conclusion (or the opposite).

  • In the US, does every provider/facility have their own charts? Or is it central data storage, so if you change providers/facilities, does it "move with you"?
  • What is the legal source for the patient's right to get the chart corrected? I keep pointing out a glaring error on a daily basis, she refuses to correct it. Are there deadlines I can insist on? Would a new provider start a new chart or keep adding to the old one? Is this state law or federal law?

[Question - Other] Would a complaint letter to the medical board help?

Are they only interested in medical malpractice, or also bad behavior in the patient/doctor relationship, not rising up to the level of medical malpractice? She doesn't listen, she wants to give me injections for which she gave me no justifications, she refuses to correct the chart, other relevant things in my past she refuses to add to the chart. I have the impression she wants to "display" me in a certain manner in the chart that isn't true and then go ahed with treatments I don't want.

Obviously, I'm now looking for a new doctor, but I still wonder if a complaint letter to the medical board would help. Are they interested in this stuff, or only in severe medical malpractice? Are refusal to communicate properly with the patient, unexplained treatments, refusal to correct the chart, refusal to add past severe infections reportable?

[Other] Ontario, Canada, Health Care Log

Hi - not sure if this is the right sub, or if people will actually be interested, but when universal healthcare gets discussed in the US, there often seems to be a pretty bad understanding of what life in the our health care system is like.

While I'm a big believer in actual data over individual anecdotes, for good or for bad I thought it might be useful to keep a journal of my and my families' contact with the medical system.

I'm going to anonymize the heck out of it. I am not going to editorialize. I'll use this post to catch up on some less-recent medical contact (last 2ish months) but will try to be more on-time in the future, if I continue.

Family is:

  • Dad: Me - Male, 40s, non-smoker, no major medical issues.
  • Mom: Female, 40s, non-smoker, hypertyroid, no other major issues.
  • Kid1: Female 5-10 years old, no major medical issues.
  • Kid2: Female 5-10 years old, no major medical issues.

We are in the Toronto area (Ontario, Canada) and are Canadian citizens.

OHIP is the government funded universal healthcare program in Ontario.

Entry 1: Dad Cholesterol

May 3 2021: Some concern by relatives about hereditary cholesterol problems and it was suggested I (Dad) speak with my Dr. and my kid's Dr.

Called the Kid's Dr. and a phone call (Covid) was setup for that week (May 7) to consult.

I stalled until May 10th, then booked an appointment. My Dr.'s office has an online booking system. I used that and had a video appointment setup for the next day (May 11). My Dr. is on a year-long leave, so I was warned a different Dr. from the office would do the call.

Call started on time. Good discussion. Blood work was ordered. A test requisition was immediately emailed to me, which I printed. Discussed a secondary issue as well. Dr. asked for photos to be uploaded, which I did via their portal. No follow up required on the secondary issue.

I stalled a few days then called a local bloodwork clinic and set an appointment for May 20th. This appointment went off without a hitch - in and out in approx 15 minutes.

May 25, my Dr. emailed and said they had reviewed my results, nothing serious or urgent, but suggested I setup a new appointment to discuss the results. I again setup a video appointment via their portal for the next day (May 26). Appointment started on time, we discussed the results for about 15 minutes, and that was it.

All of the above was covered by the OHIP, the Ontario universal health care program.

Entry 2: Mom leg problems

In the last few months, Mom identified a potentially significant orthopedic problem with her leg. It causes some pain flares, but does not currently impair mobility.

She met with her GP, who referred her to a Ortho specialist for a video appointment. Specialist recommended some imaging (cat scan I think? Not an MRI in any case). Mom had an alternate Ortho Dr. she wanted a second opinion from. She asked her GP to refer her to that Dr. as well. Her GP agreed. Video appointment was setup for July 7th. Specialist requisitioned an MRI, recommended physio, and some over-the-counter pain meds.

MRI was setup for Aug 6 at 3am (!).

Mom contacted a local physio place to setup appointments. OTC medication was purchased.

Physio is not covered by OHIP, but is covered by our work health plans. OTC medication is not covered and is out of pocket.

Entry 3: Kid 2 Skin Issues

Kid 2 has a rash of lesions on her skin. We had became concerned and contacted her Dr, who gave us some advice and told us to monitor. After monitoring, we contacted the GP again and were referred to a dermatologist. We contacted the derm's office on June 15th, and were given a phone appointment for July 21.

July 21 phone appointment went fine. Dr. recommended three treatment options, one of which was "do nothing", and the other two require office visits.

Two appointments were available - one sometime in August, which we declined because of our schedules. The other was Sept 8, which we accepted.

All the above is covered by OHIP.

Entry 4: Dad's leg

July 10th I sprained something playing sports. It improved, but slowly.

By July 20th Mom insisted I get a Dr's opinion. My Dr.'s office has an online booking system. I used that and had a video appointment setup for the next day (July 21). My Dr. is on a year-long leave, so I was warned a different Dr. from the office would do the call.

Appointment started on time. Dr. thought probably nothing wrong, but said they had some concerns and would like an x-ray and ultrasound to be performed.

I was immediately emailed an x-ray and ultrasound requisition. I called three local imaging clinics. Appointments were offered today (July 22), tomorrow (July 23) or later next week. I took the July 22nd. Lots of spots available that day, I chose 8am.

Imaging appointment started on time. X-ray and ultrasound was performed. I was out of the office by 8:30.

Currently waiting to hear back from my Dr. and will update when that happens.

All the above is covered by OHIP.

Notes

  • Video appointments are new thanks to Covid. I love them.
  • It seems like specialist appointments are easier to get right now than in prior times. I have no data to support this, but Mom's ability to get two Ortho appointments within a few weeks seemed remarkable. The Derm. appointment took longer, and from previous experience I believe Dermatologists are one of the harder specialists to book in my area.

[Question-Other] What would happen if someone gets the vaccine while unknowingly infected with Covid?

I'm not treating answers here as medical advice.

I finally got vaxxed yesterday. (I've been isolating as much as possible/wearing masks)

On the form they asked if I had Covid/been in contact with someone who had. I said no. Got the shot.

Then I started thinking that I did feel a little build up in my throat for a few days before that. And while I've been careful, my roommates haven't been. So it's possible that I do have a mild case of Covid already I guess.

So what would happen if I did have a mild case of Covid and then got vaxxed?

[Question - Insurance] PCP retroactively out of network after life event (USA)

Note: The below is USA-specific.

Hello! First the good news: I got married in late March this year (yay me!).

In mid-April, I went to my longtime PCP for an annual checkup.

In late April, I decided to use the 30-day window of the life event of our marriage to enroll under my wife's healthcare plan mid-cycle, as it was more cost effective.

What I didn't realize: When one uses a life event to change healthcare elections mid-cycle, the change gets backdated to the date of the actual life event (in this case, our wedding in late March)

My PCP is out-of-network of the new healthcare plan, and that plan has no out-of-network coverage. I knew this (and planned on changing PCPs anyway), but didn't realize that the change would be backdated.

The situation: Due to the backdated healthcare change, I am now left with having to pay for the PCP visit out of pocket, which totals $600. My old insurance doesn't want to pay, as I retroactively wasn't insured with them anymore, and my new insurance doesn't want to pay, as this particular doctor is not covered.

Is there any path here where I am not left with having to pay the entire cost out of pocket? Can I appeal to either insurance, or can I perhaps ask my PCP to reduce the cost on account that I was then retroactively not insured with him (and on account that I have been with him for a few years already)?

I appreciate any suggestions.

P.S.: My wife is a doctor at a large hospital chain, which is why her health plan doesn't have out-of-network coverage, as her employer prefers for their employees and dependents to utilize their own vast network of doctors for all healthcare needs. Which is fine under normal circumstances and I was aware of this before we made the decision that I would go under her health plan.

P.P.S.: The only circumstance under which I am covered for out-of-network expenses is if I happen to be in a location where there are no in-network doctors anywhere nearby. That is, however, not the case in this situation.

COBRA while moving? [QUESTION - INSURANCE]

So the ARP gave us the option to extend COBRA, but I was told because I had an HMO and had to move out of state I couldn't continue my coverage. Somehow they sounded surprised by this question -- anyone know if legally COBRA/ an employer is required (generally or in accordance with any ARP stipulations) to offer something comparable when someone loses their job due to Covid and has to move out of state? I just imagine...so many people are in this exact position?

Healthcare manager in Hungary - Egészségügyi menedszer [Question - Other]

Hi!

I' planning to start my master's in healthcare management. I've read the introduction texts but I still don't quite get what a healthcare manager does every day. I belive there are multiple manager positions as well. I would like to know more about the profession's pros and cons and your experiences. What position can a freshly graduated manager apply for and what positions can you be promoted to?

Also if you happen to work in Hungary how hard was it for you to find a job as a healthcare manager?

Sorry for the bad English and thank you for your help!
