[Question - Insurance]

Hi everyone, I’ll keep this brief.

I’m considering quitting my job later in July. My brother let me know that in the past when he has quit jobs, he has gotten to keep his insurance for 6 months through COBRA.

This doesn’t sound right to me, but is it possible? In addition, what would my options be to get insurance if I were to lose it from quitting my job? I would think I could hit the marketplace at healthcare.gov right?

FYI, I live in Arizona, but am employed out of New York if that matters.

[Question - Insurance]Help with new insurance plan choice

Hello!

My wife and I are recently without health insurance due to a change in my career. The company I am with now offers health insurance but it’s more expensive than what the Healthcare Marketplace is offering me for better plans.

I don’t really understand but I am looking at some Kaiser Permanente plans and some Blue Choice plans. I see the deductible numbers but then on the plan benefits page it says “no charge” for some stuff or just copays. Is it really no charge at all, or just a copay, or is it a copay and then whatever they bill me?

How much am I actually going to pay if I go to an urgent care(Patient First, etc;)? Or maybe to a doctor for the flu? I really don’t understand this. My old plan was just copays for everything. No deductible. Nothing. Just copay at the visit and that’s it.

Any advice is welcome!

[Question - Other] Employer blocking fulltime employees from company healthcare policy (New Jersey)

Hello I've been working for a company for about 5 years and I just never was smart enough to be put on the health insurance policy until now. They're telling me conflicting numbers on the rate I'm going to have to pay each month which really raised my attention in the first place. It seems like they're trying everything they can to get me not to sign up for health care, even insinuating they would give me a raise. I already submitted my paperwork to management, but if they neglect to file my paperwork for this open enrollment, what should I do? Any advice would be much appreciated.

[Question - Other] Is it normal for it to be this difficult to get testing done?

Hi ya'll, looking to find out if I'm going crazy or if I'm actually perfectly sane, and advice for how I can get the help I need either way.

I've been having stomach pain for a month. After the first 2 weeks of it, I went to a clinic on my college campus and was told it was indigestion. Two weeks later it was still ongoing, and I recalled I had some unrelated blood work to handle, so I decided to hit two birds with one stone and talk to someone else about the stomach pain too.

I told the guy all of my symptoms; Upper left pain around the stomach or spleen, a pulling sensation, feeling full after eating only a little, fatigue, nausea, and a couple more headaches than usual. He asked if I ever had an acidic taste in my mouth, and I mentioned it happened, just once, after I almost threw up. He diagnosed it as acid reflux immediately. I went on to get my blood taken after he said that, if it were anything else, I might get back weird blood work results, but that he doubted it.

My blood work came back with eosinophilia (1.29k/uL, 18%). My PCP (not the acid reflux guy) messaged me later saying it's probably just allergies. I don't know if she's even aware of the stomach pain. I'm not even really having any allergies as far as I can tell. I would've thought that she'd want to do some testing to figure out why my bones are cranking out a fleet of white blood cells but, when I messaged her that I was wondering if all of my symptoms could be related, she read the message and hasn't responded in 3 workdays (her hospital has a policy where they normally respond within 48 hours).

With all of this going on I decided to call my case manager to help me find a specialist, and that's how I found out that even despite the insurance not needing a referral, all the nearby specialists require one. So I'm stuck in limbo. At this point I tried everything; calling my doctors office, calling student advocacy, calling my insurance, calling my case manager again, calling everyone.

All of it has ended either in a promise of a call back that never comes, or being passed off and told to call a new phone number. And while I'm doing all of this, I'm in pain, I'm dehydrated because it hurts to drink much, and I just want to sleep all day, which I've done multiple days recently because I'm exhausted. I feel like I'm starting to breakdown, not just from this, but with this as a final straw. I had to drop my summer class due to how bad I feel and my research is going to the wayside.

I broke down and told the student advocacy guy how exhausted I am, how I don't know if I can handle making more phone calls with no results, and it ended in him saying he'd email me a phone number for an advocate at the hospital my doctor works at. I never even got that email from him. I'm so tired of the people who's job it is to help passing the buck until I hit someone who doesn't even bother to do that much.

Am I being unrealistic and expecting too much or is this society as unempathetic as it feels?

[Question - Other] $300 Telemedicine Visit?

Hi - Just asking if this is normal. I had a 15 minute telemedicine visit at a specialist (Gastro) that ended up costing $300. Insurance negotiated rates knocked it down to $199, but my question is, is this a normal cost? Or was I perhaps incorrectly billed? I have no copays and HDP so I was expecting at least $100 bill but $200 just seems really excessive for what it was.

[Question - Other] Mom needs eye surgery, but doctors won't sign off to let her get it because of health

Mom needs glaucoma or cataracts (forgot which) in order to see. She is really having trouble seeing. Here's the situation:

  • Mom is anti-medication, so wouldn't take regular pills to bring her blood pressure down. Non-negotiable, unfortunately.
  • She was willing to get the eye surgery, but they won't take her unless the doctors sign off on her being well enough for surgery. I think it was mostly blood pressure/cholesterol, but there was some talk of pre-diabetes I think. I'm pretty sure you can get eye surgery even if you're diabetic/pre-diabetic. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
  • Even if she would take regular medication (she won't) or exercised regularly (she never has, so doubt that would change no with poor vision), it's not like she can go engage in 3 months of cardio and blood pressure medication anyway when she needs to be able to see now.

Is there some sort of liquid one-off medication she could take the day of the eye surgery to get her blood pressure down to where they will let her get her eye surgery? I think the pill form might be particularly off-putting to her, but also having to take anything daily for weeks/month/years is a no go.

tl;dr Mom won't take daily pills, has high blood pressure, needs eye surgery to see. How can we get them to let her go through this procedure so her quality of life can improve?

Thank you!

[Question - Other] Doctor wants me to schedule an appointment for follow-up questions about my prescription

I used to be able to message my doctor on my healthcare app about my prescription and would get a reply the next day. Now I am on strong antibiotics and have many side effects so I messaged her to make sure this is normal, but the doctor never wrote me back anymore. At first the nurse called me and told me what the doctor said, then of course I had some more side effects and kept communicating with them through messages, but they never told me if these side effects are normal or not, now doctor wanted me to schedule an appointment. I ask very simple questions, just about the side effects, why can’t they just tell me if it’s normal or not? Why do I have to wait 5 days and pay a co-pay for them to tell me it’s normal? I know they’re busy so I don’t expect an answer right away, but why can’t doctor just spend 5 minutes to write back whenever she has the chance? Are doctors not allowed to answer questions through messages anymore? I am so confused and frustrated.

Before you tell me to see the doc, I've seen them twice and they simply told me to get a massage and stretch because it might be a pinched nerve.

In March it burned and hurt a lot, I took two weeks off if running abd stopped deadlifting for two months. The burning went away especially after stretching it a lot every night. My pain is all gone but it's still numb especially when I'm on my feet at work. In the morning when I get up from bed I can feel it, and it's actually very warm. But I do this weird thing where I find myself itching it and realizing I can feel it when I compare to my other thigh. Maybe it's nerve damage and needs more time to heal? Idk, right now I'm paranoid because I have two friends who were just diagnosed with MS. Plus I was bit by a dog a month ago and had to go to the ER and I'll be paying that bill off until December. I’m an award-winning reporter who investigates finances in the health care industry. Ask me anything about how to fight the predatory health care system--and win.

Every year, millions of Americans are overcharged and underserved while the health care industry makes record profits. We know something is wrong, but the layers of bureaucracy designed to discourage complaints make pushing back seem impossible. At least, this is what the health care power players want you to think. Drawing on 15 years of investigating the health care industry, I’ll explain how companies and individuals have managed to force medical providers to play fair, and shows how you can, too. I can reveals the industry's pressure points and how companies and individuals have fought overbilling, price gouging, insurance denials, and more to get the care they deserve.

I lay out a practical plan for protecting yourself against the system's predatory practices in my new book, Never Pay the First Bill: And Other Ways to Fight the Health Care System and Win. But I want to answer your individual questions about tried-and-true strategies such as:

  • Analyze and contest your medical bills, so you don't pay more than you should
  • Obtain the billing codes for a procedure in advance
  • Write in an appropriate treatment clause before signing financial documents
  • Get your way by suing in small claims court

Few politicians and CEOs have been willing to stand up to the medical industry. It is up to the American people to equip ourselves to fight back for the sake of our families--and everyone else.

He is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and recipient of the Harvard Kennedy School's Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. Looking for healthcare for nursing school [discussion]

Hey r/Healthcare... I am currently looking for healthcare for my nursing school program. According to my guidelines, it has to be ACA certified.

I am looking for my family for some answers... Reason why is because my mom is currently looking at Medi-Share as an option for health insurance, but from what I’m understanding, it is not health insurance, is it? It’s more of a share plan?

If it’s not insurance, what would be some viable cheap options for healthcare coverage?

I also want to hear about coverage for later transitioning costs for myself, being a closeted trans woman... 😁

[Discussion] How do you greet people whom you know are already feeling bad?

So long story short, I used to work in the regular world, and would just greet people with "Hello [name]! How are you doing today?" Very excited and brightly.

Well now I work in healthcare, and many patients I see are doing good just to make it in that day. I've found my standard greeting to be just a little less useable. I've tried "hi [name], it's good to see you!", But that just sounds too, idk, robotic. I just know I want to keep my excited/bright sounding tone.

So all that being said, how would you want to be greeted on a shitty day in a shitty month in a shitty year? If you were in my position, how would you greet a patient that is in so much pain they can't move?

I just found out that my insurance does not cover me getting a vasectomy because it is "not a preventative service" according to the Affordable Care Act. I am utterly dumbfounded.

  1. It most certainly is preventative. It is the most preventative medicine ever. It prevents a whole human (or a whole lot of humans) and all associated costs.
  2. Wouldn't the insurance company rather pay for the relatively cheap and easy procedure of a vasectomy rather than all the expenses associated with pregnancy?
  3. At the core is the blatantly sexist assumption that birth control is a woman's problem.

I really don't get it. All I can say is we need Single Payer Healthcare now.

[Discussion] Video recording is coming to unlock the mysteries of the operating room.

Much of what happens in the operating room is shrouded in mystery:

1.The patient goes to sleep,

2.The surgeon goes to work,

  1. Things go as planned (fingers crossed)

Lets take a deeper look

1) Though hospitals track patient outcomes for surgeons, most of today’s reporting and analysis falls short of the insights that could be possible with more sophisticated data from the operating room. Video unlocks masses of medical data.

2) There’s a growing movement to change that, guided by research linking what happens under the knife to patient outcomes.

3) More rigorous evaluation of surgical technique is on the horizon, aided by technology companies turning laparoscopic cameras and other surgical tools into sources of ground truth.

4) There’s immense promise in using robust data and artificial intelligence to improve the practice of surgery. But surgeons caution that using video and other tech for board certification or performance reviews can be risky.

5) Some hospital systems have already started adopting video and data capture systems in the operating room.

- Caresyntax,

- C-SATS,

- Surgical Safety Technologies

Each will be used to record procedures by 150 surgeons, who will also be asked to review videos of their peers’.

6) Using Video to audit surgeons?

When a bad patient outcome occurs.

Current practice

1.Hold a regular morbidity meeting

In the future

  1. AI driven videos

7) The Problem?

Being human beings, we don’t necessarily register some of these things as being consequential,” Benefit AI might be able to help tease out which steps in a surgery affect how well a patient fares

8) AI to explain the why.

We were only able to explain only a proportion of the variation in why some surgeons do systematically better than others,

9) Video + AI to Compare Surgeons

Surgeon 1

Put in four structures, they don’t look as smooth and as slick as the person who puts in three.

Surgeon 2

Puts in four structures. leads to better patient outcomes. Video makes this data available to follow up on patient outcomes.

10) The real benefit?

Annotated Videos for AI. Means if you have a specific tumor. Your surgeon can scan a worldwide database of similar operations to find the best technique for patient outcomes.

11) Secondary Benefits.

Surgeon leader boards. Means Quantifiable Based Recruitment.

12) 10 years from now?

AI tools will report back on surgeries and provide the surgeons with an improvement report.

[Question - Other] Do you relax your grip when you faint?

Do you lose your grip when you faint?

I’ve had some issues with tachycardia lately, and last week I seemed to have fainted in the shower, with no immediate signs it would happen.

It was like lights out, lights on. I don’t remember landing on my hip, didn’t feel it, but I have probably the biggest bruise I have ever had there. Still no pain though.

I seemed to come to when my arm pit the side of the tub, and then it was like an adrenaline rush. I realize my hand outside the tub was still tightly gripped on to my razor. I thought that was weird? My legs and everything gave out, but my hand didn’t relax?

Obviously me falling made a loud sound that alerted and worried my fiancé, but I didn’t hear it. I finished my shower sitting on the floor just kind of freaked out and feeling the rush.

I’m just glad I didn’t seem to hit my head, but I am terrified of that happening again.

A Quantum Life is an important book to help understand the institutional hurdles that have kept science mostly white and male — and how the fire of inquiry can take root in a heart and lift it up.

[Question-other] I got a decently big horizontal splinter in my hand. Is it ok if i dont remove it?

Today, 2 hours ago I got a decently big splinter in my right hand (bottom left) I tried taking it out and it kinds worked. But still, smaller pieces, the deepest ones are still stuck inside.

It it ok if I just leave it alone? My friend did the same and it eventually got out in around a week. Should I do the same?

[Question - Other] Frequent Heart APC’s at 17 arrhythmia. Is it dangerous ?

So I am 17, and in January 2021, i had a panic attack which stemmed from a google search I did regarding something else I experienced the day before. This was the first panic attack I ever had it was 3AM and I had no idea what was going on. Infact I thought i was going to die.

anyway, since than my heart rhythm has never been the same, I had premature beats followed by one heavy beat and than sometimes extra beats etc. I was in college one day and had a series of APC’s and went very light headed and nearly fainted. I went to the doctors. After running a series of tests like my blood, a ecg, chest X-ray, listened to my heart etc, I was put on a 24hr ecg after which they decided I had atrial fibrillation and put me on bisoprasol to slow my heart rate down. They said apart from that, everything looked ok and my heart was healthy?

anyway, when I feel my pulse still, I can feel 3 beats than a pause than a heavy beat Which is reoccurring and to me sounds like APC’s. Typing this message makes it more frequent because of anxiety etc. I also have a highly active thyroid which I’m not sure if that is contributing to it

I am 17 6ft and weigh 63KG

[Question - Insurance] How can I get Health Insurance privately as a F1 student paying taxes as Resident Alien

My employer does not provide insurance and I lost my previous insurance in February.

DO I qualify for Medicare and are there any options that I can get health insurance without paying 500 or 600 every month.

I am paying my taxes as a Resident alien since I am on F1 for 5 years. So I am paying Medicare and SSN taxes.

Any help is appreciated.

[Question - other] what if I don’t want to pay my bill

I went to the ER recently. They made me wait for over an hour, and I was getting too sick to stay there. I had no choice but to leave. So all they did was made me more sick and I did not receive any medical service, but they still charged me $430 for “triage”. I called them and talked to multiple people but they kept repeating like a broken record that this balance is correct. I’m not paying this. If I don’t pay it, what will happen? Is this going to affect my credit score? Im not worried about not being able to go to this hospital anymore. There are plenty of other options. I just can’t let them rob me for no reason.

[News] It took a pandemic, but the US finally has (some) centralized medical data - Covid exposed the fragmented reality of US health records. Now an effort to bring together data from millions of patients is starting to show results.
