[Discussion] How much do you budget each month to spend on healthcare for the year (No HSA's involved) U.S.A.

I am single. I never put money into HSA's

I know how they work. But I'd rather keep my money liquid. As a single person, I needed to.

I'm middle aged now and my health issues are surfacing.

And I need to budget $500/month for health costs. (no less)

The problem now is, that many people were out of work for a long time during Covid.

And with that lapse in health insurance it will cost more to catch up on untreated health

First the benefits may not start for 90 days, then it could take longer to get an appt (assuming a person needs to see a specialist and isnt established).

So roughly 6 months out from initial start date of a job

Thats a long time to get one's health back on track.

I wish employers could have a benefit start date on the first day on a job

[Question - Insurance] Can I, a U.S. citizen visit Iceland to seek cancer treatments and pay out of pocket since my US health insurance won't cover me?

Title says it all. This is in lieu of a friend of mine who lives in Texas and was recently diagnosed with Stage I endometrial cancer. She had to have emergency surgery on parts of her uterus/tubes due to severe pain, bleeding, and complications. This all happened about 2 weeks ago, so this is very new for her and been a rollercoaster of emotions...

Her health insurance isn't taken at MD Anderson in Houston, TX and out of pocket expenses will total around $20k+ for her. She's looked at other insurance policies but they all end up being absolute crap.

We heard about folks visiting other countries for health care purposes and so, hence this post.

If anyone knows of possible costs for seeking cancer treatment in Iceland, or any European countries for that matter, please let us know!!

I'm new to posting here so hopefully I didn't break any rules.

Big Thanks, A Texan

[question - other] I just need an itemized invoice from Tenet’s central billing. They do not call back.

I paid a large amount for a procedure on an FSA. The facility says they cannot provide the paperwork because it’s at ‘central billing’ they give me a phone number and the only option is to leave a voicemail. Nobody ever calls back. My FSA now has me locked out of the remainder of my FSA balance because I was unable to show an itemized receipt. I’m thinking Small claims court is the only course to get this back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

[Question - Insurance] This dental plan seems great, what is the catch?

I want to enroll in dental insurance. Most I've seen has $1,000 to $1,500 max payout per year. This plan seems to not have a maximum payout. It is centered around copayments, but they seem extremely cheap.

If I am reading this correctly, after I pay the $50 deductible (and wait for 12 months) all major dental works, like crowns and root canals, would only cost me a $222 copayment for in network or $412 for out of network? And I could get as many as I'd need? The premium is also only $12, much cheaper than most other plans.

What exactly am I missing here? Why does this seem so much better than all the other plans?

[Question - Insurance] Marketplace coverage for seasonal employee who's summer gig offers healthcare - is there a way out of getting screwed?

So to my understanding, I lose my tax credit for marketplace coverage when i start my summer job - taking it from $100/month to >$300/month. I have to then cut my marketplace coverage and pick up a new plan through my employer. Then I'm laid off in November, lose my employer healthcare, and switch back to marketplace coverage.

Because of this, I essentially have double the deductible, out-of-pocket costs, etc as everybody else paying the same premiums for the same plans.

How can I be less fucked over?

[question - insurance] accidentally paid for service twice. How do I resolve?

I got a claims statement from my insurance company, which showed my appointments, coverages and amount I still owed. I was able to pay the amount through the app, so I completed that.

Then a month later I got a statement from the hospital with different amounts and clustering of services, and I paid that on their site.

I’m a high risk pregnancy, so there were a lot of appointments that month, and I realized I overlapped some of these transactions, about $800.

I’ve called the insurance company, who say they already sent the money to the hospital. I’ve called the hospital, who can’t tell me they received the other payments, but that they it takes a long time to process them.

I’ve been battling this for 6 months. Is there any hope I’ll get my money back, or is it just lost in the system indefinitely?

[Discussion] A bills cap in healthcare

I'm a bit unsure if this is the right sub to post this in, but I think it fits.

In Norway we have pretty good health care and the thing I appreciate most, being young and poor, is "frikort" (free card, don't know if it has an actual english term). After you've paid a certain amount (this year it's almost $300) you get a frikort and you're excused from paying any more medical bills that year. Before 2021, there were two different frikort with separate amounts. My psychologist bills would count for card 1 and my physiotherapy bills would count for card 2. This year they've been combined, however.

A frikort covers the doctor, medicine/supplements and medical equipment under a blue prescription, a psychologist, the hospital, laboratories and x-ray places, physiotherapy, and certain dental illnesses. You might still have to pay the bills but the state will pay you back within a week.

For reference, a doctors appointment and public psychologist appointment will usually be about $50. Children under 16 don't pay anything for healthcare.

So I'm wondering, what you guys think about this system? What are the pros and, more interestingly, the cons?

Appealing a health insurance claim [Question - Insurance]

Does anyone have proven tactics or advice for appealing an insurance claim? I’m currently looking at a $32,000 bill from an emergency surgery I had in January to fix my shattered ankle and my United Healthcare insurance is being super shady and confusing about it.

It was out of network but I called before the surgery and got approval since I was 400 miles away from my network area (I live in San Luis Obispo, CA... was in same state though, in Davis, CA). I got a call 2 days before my surgery from the hospital saying that insurance wasn’t going to cover it. I called United again, got a different person on the phone, and explained that it was an emergency, I had already waited a week in between breaking it and my surgery date, they said since it was an emergency they would cover it as in-network. Didn’t get it in writing, just assumed they would keep their promise. I was super stressed out and in a lot of pain/on painkillers at the time.

Got the surgery, the bill was $59,000 originally but figured my insurance was going to cover most of it... then got a notice from the hospital that United had backtracked and instead of covering at in-network they had done some back-end thing to pay Medicare/Medi-Cal rates and I still owed $32,000.

I have a United Healthcare PPO, I called before my procedure, I’ve probably talked to like 10 different people from United since then and get a different answer every time. Finally got a notice that “it was processed correctly” so now I have to appeal.

Just looking for what info to include in my appeal letter... in terms of what I was told originally vs what they did, the fact that they did some kind of deal that doesn’t make any sense to me and isn’t outlined anywhere in my plan info to get to the amount they did, the fact that the $32,000 is more than I make in a year at my job, I don’t have any savings, don’t own any assets equal to that amount, just finished paying off my student loans, my credit isn’t good enough to get a new loan, etc?

Full story: I’m 29/female, and have had employer-paid healthcare with my job since I was 25, I was visiting my parents for Christmas and rolled my ankle carrying a load of laundry to my room, I had a plate and screws in my fibula from another break and surgery 8 years ago, and my fibula broke along all the screw locations, leaving my bone in 8 pieces. I also dislocated my ankle and fractured the bottom of my tibia, and all the tendons on the outside of my ankle had been completely ripped off of the bone and had to be sutured back on.

The break was really bad, basically snapped my fibula in half above the plate and there was no way of fixing it without surgery. They had to take out the old hardware and put in a new plate and screws among other things.

I’m also in the (at this point 4+ year) process of getting a diagnosis for hypermobility/joint issues, especially in my feet/ankles/knees/hips. This injury was absolutely a result of my unstable joints.

The hypermobility/possible EDS issues have been super stressful and frustrating and hard to find knowledgeable practitioners to help with. The surgeon they paired me with at Sutter Davis was amazing and knowledgeable about hypermobility and planned my surgery around that knowledge. I didn’t feel comfortable waiting longer to get the surgery and going back to SLO to possibly have someone less knowledgeable mess it up (SLO isn’t known for cutting-edge medical care).

Ultimately a lot of lessons learned but bottom line is I can’t afford what I’m being asked to pay and I’m extremely frustrated and just feel really dehumanized by my insurance company treating this like it’s not their problem. Any advice is appreciated!

I reported my family doctor and several people lost thier jobs [other]

Hello everyone, I've WAS seeing this family doctor for about a year and he was hands down the worst doctor I've ever come across in my entire life. The office staff refused to do thier job, I'd have to call 20-40 times just to get someone to answer the phone. I won't get into specific detail but long story short, he was putting every single one of his patients at risk including me. I still see a nurse practitioner at the same office who is pretty nice. Last week I got a call from the attorney generals office saying I'd get a letter to tell me what my complaint resulted in. Well today I went to see my nurse practitioner, walked up to the front window and I noticed the entire office staff was new except maybe 2-3 people and those ones looked at me with such disgust.

If you come across a corrupt doctor or anything like that, just report them to the medical board. Doctors in my area are some of the nastiest people I've come across. They think they can do whatever they want because they went to medical school and "help" people. Just Google how to report a doctor to the medical board online and it only takes 10 minutes to fill out the form. Took about a month to hear anything from the office but clearly it resulted in change and I don't remotely feel bad I had a few people get fired. If you can't do your job or show sick people compassion then you don't deserve to have it. That is all, thank you

[Discussion] family members who are healthcare workers hesitant about taking COVID vaccine

So I have some family members who are healthcare workers (specifically nurses) who are hesitant to take the vaccine. I understand being worried when it first came out but it’s been about a year since they were first tested, about 5 months since they were distributed to the general public, and all the research done to create the vaccines came from previous studies. Being healthcare workers they already have priority access to it but of course they refuse to take it.

I’m not sure if I came to the right group to post about this but I guess I was wondering why my family members who are healthcare workers are suspicious about this vaccine. Is their suspicions valid or are they just believing the conspiracies? Are other healthcare workers having the same suspicions too or are more workers supportive of the vaccines? Would love to get some feedback from those in the field.

(Also please note I’m not against the vaccine myself. I actually got my first dose not too long ago).

The title is the TLDR, but in short, I have medicare for my home state. I'm currently at school in another state. I need to refill my prescriptions, and this was the exchange I had with a representative.
"We can't cover your prescription because you're out-of-state. Do you have someone who lives in your state that can send it to you?"
"Isn't it illegal to send prescription drugs through the mail?"
"Yes, but it's your only option."
"What, to break the law?"
"In essence."
Look, I get that this is how the system works and that they only have certain pharmacies in-network, but the closest in-network pharmacy to me is 40 miles away! My school isn't in the middle of nowhere either, there are multiple Walgreens within 10 miles.
Thankfully my meds are $30 for a month's supply with goodrx and other discounts but it pisses me off to think of someone in my position needing insulin or some other expensive medication needing to pay out of pocket or break the law to get the meds they need.
We need a new system.

I've heard some horrible things on reddit.

Do doctors take medicaid? I mean like every doctor, is the coverage similar to what you have with usual insurance?

[Question - Insurance]

The minimum required income to get ACA subsidy is $12,800.

I'm on unemployment.

If I cant get work in 2021, my income will be less than $12,800.

If I enroll in ACA, I will owe $714 of the monthly premium amount in 2022 because I did not qualify for that subsidy.

Correct?

I need SPECIALTY healthcare

None of the SPECIALTY doctors (gynecologists) will schedule in advance an appointment to see me UNTIL I show proof of insurance, up front.

The risk

I sign up for ACA, and am told that a specialty doc cant see me for 3 months.

Then we run into 2022 because I need a hysterectomy.

I end up owing the $714/mo premium because I didnt qualify for the subsidy

And all I got was maybe a one time consultation in 2021

ACA isnt affordable. Its restricted to income and if the income isnt sufficient, I will pay the full amt.

I cant get hired anywhere. A discussion about employment isnt the focus of this post.

[Question - other] is it possible to get care? U.S.A.

I need to see a gynecologist

Not obstetrics, but for middle age gynecological issues.

Planned parenthood is not an option. Walk in clinics are not an option.

I have a pending lawsuit for an employment law matter. I filed it pro se.

As a result, no gynecologist will see me.

As an uninsured patient I went to the ER about my medical issue and was told I need a hysterectomy due to multiple fibroids. Laproscopy isnt an option, birth control isnt an option. The only option is abdominal surgery.

But no specialty gynecologist will see me. They keep cancelling their appointments, stringing me along.

A paralegal told me its because I have a pending lawsuit.

I got a letter in the mail today from that gynecologist stating, "Dr so and so will no longer be your doctor, because she cant maintain an effective physician/patient relationship and cant provide optimum care."

The gynecologist office said last year that they would offer charity care for me to have the procedure. And then this year, withdrew that option

This State wants people in poverty (not working) and on Govt programs.

I need to work, and I need work that covers housing, car and healthcare.

So therefore, no gynecologist will perform a hysterectomy or even do a biopsy first to rule out cancer.

Uterine cancer runs in my family.

The hospital financial advisors wont speak with me. Their insurance dept wont speak with me.

I had questions about if I enrolled in ACA, how soon would I be able to see a doctor. And no one could answer that.

ACA isnt free. I want to know if I would be denied gynecological after enrolling in ACA too.

But no one will speak with me.

I googled this hospital'a health system and they have many lawsuits from patients and internal employees.

There is a shortage of hospitals in TN. And the other hospitals will not see a patient unless they have actul insurance, but before I sign up for ACA, they wont give me an idea of how long it would take for me to see a doctor.

I am preparing my Will and burial plans just in case. If I cant get healthcare, then I should prepare for end of life costs.

[Question - Other] Why do providers bill at such a high rate? My example seems insane!

We just got the EOB for cataract surgery in one eye. The replacement lens was a basic single vision replacement so basically the "standard" option and the procedure went well with no complications nor other issues.. The patient is on a Medicare Advantage program through their Government Retiree/pension plan. The surgery was performed in a hospital outpatient clinic by a Ophthalmologist that has their own practice. All were in-network for the Medicare Advantage plan.

The total gross billings including hospital and physicians was $32,000! The amount approved by the insurer was roughly $3,200 (but not exactly 10%) with the patient's portion being the plan's standard 20% co-pay of roughly $640.

I've seen large insurance discounts before but never anything that reduces to by 90% for such a large billing. With the possible exception of some medical tests originally billed at several hundred dollars.

So my question is why to providers bill such high amounts when they know they'll be reduced so dramatically. Especially in this case where $32,000 for basic cataract surgery is outrageous. A quick google search shows the average cost is $3,500. Since $3,500 is average, I can't see any individual nor insurance paying anything remotely close to the $32,000 gross billing.

[Other] I developed a mental health related app to overcome anxiety and depression!

So basically last year I was feeling a bit low. I really didn’t know how to become better since I had never faced this before. I used to not get proper sleep and woke up after having dreams due to my anxiety. So I just started noting what activities I did and whom I did it with in a google doc. Slowly I also started rating how I felt about the interaction. Soon I started to notice a pattern that I felt better when I hung out with some people and when I did certain activities. This way I was able to feel much better than before and I gained confidence that I can control my own mental health. I stopped dreaming as frequently since then. I even built an app for this so that other people can do the same .

The app is called Happyer which was made based on the above experience and provides insights into impact of a given activity or friend.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.happyer4life for android https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/happyer/id1537711110 for iOS.

I have created a subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Happyer/ to help easily address issues/bugs & to allow users to share their happy experiences :)

Also here is our website https://happyer4life.com if you would like to provide feedback, donate(to handle maintenance costs) or just know more about the app!

[Question - Insurance] Changing jobs, new insurance, wife needs transfusion.

I’m starting a new job on Monday. Current insurance will last through the end of the month and new insurance will kick in June 1st. My wife has a transfusion to keep her psoriasis under control June 2 otherwise things will get very bad. In the past it has taken upwards of 30 days to get things “approved” for the medication. We’ve asked to move the transfusion date up into May and was told no.

What are the best options to make sure that we don’t miss that June 2 transfusion? Can I start the “approval” process with the new insurance early and hope for the best? Should I pay for a month of COBRA with the old insurance? Would that conflict with my new company insurance? Maybe I can do COBRA and push back my new company insurance for a month?
