[Question-Other] Crocs Banned?

I was recently hired to perform Covid tests. i’m a certified phlebotomy technician but this is my first healthcare job so don’t go too hard on me 😅 Dresscode states “close toed shoes, in white, black, grey or beige. no crocs, no heels”

By crocs do they mean the clogs with the holes or all types of crocs. no crocs with holes makes total sense, but i have a great pair without the holes so i can ideally bleach them after every shift and i still have protection from sharps and bodily fluids.

that being said, if all crocs are banned, which easy to disinfect shoes would you recommend?

TIA,
your cleanly phlebotomist.

[Question - Other] Wife’s OBGYN had us pre-pay for prenatal care and delivery, closed his practice before they sent deductible refund

TLDR at bottom.

Title pretty much says it all. Our 3rd baby was born in December, and this OB had delivered all of ours. Their office had always had the prepayment policy, but inevitably the hospital would file with insurance first, so her doctor would always end up refunding us most of the money because we had hit our deductible. We usually got it back in 2-3 weeks, and it was never an issue. With this one, we were chasing them for about a month and a half for the $1,700 in overpayment they owe us, which was very unusual. A few days ago I called the office, ready to demand an explanation and insist we get our funds ASAP considering they committed the refund a month ago, and I get an “after hours” message from their line in the middle of the day. Did a little bit of digging on social media, and it turns out the doctor suddenly closed his practice.

No notes on the main webpage, nothing on the voicemail about it, Google still says they’re open, etc. I have the doctor’s cell, who finally responded once and says that Suzie (not her real name) would take care of it. The fun part is, I talked to “Suzie”, who said that she was no longer employed there and did not know what he was talking about.

Long story short, I called my insurance company (UHC) and told them the story. They confirmed that the doctor is still under contract with them, and that they would support me if legal action is necessary because the doctor was clearly overpaid according to our plan. They said they would give him some time to respond first before escalating. I’m trying to get them to put some heat on it, because it seems there are certainly some red flags with how he’s acting.

Anything I should be doing now besides getting insurance to pursue this? Another question – if he declares bankruptcy, are we in danger of never seeing this money, or not seeing it for a very extended period of time?

TLDR: OBGYN made us prepay for wife’s prenatal care/delivery. Owed us $1700 for deductible overpayment. Closed doors after already agreeing to reimburse, but never did. Red flags like no notice on website, nothing about being closed on voicemail, still shows open on Google, referring me to terminated employees. Insurance company involved. Am I screwed if he declares bankruptcy?

[Question - Other] Seeking advice on health care worker Union in UK

Hello,

Not sure this is the right subreddit, but I need some pointers. Any help is appreciated.

Someone close to me working in UK in private healthcare (think about taking care of residents with medical conditions) has been dismissed (wrongfully) : apparently he was seen not wearing a mask properly (did not cover his entire mouth +nose) while speaking on the phone, alone in a room, for less than a minute. Once he realized the mask slipped he put it back properly.

He has until early next week to make an appeal and find someone to represent him. He is not part of a union (yet) : Any suggestions as to which one would represent him as soon as he joins? Is this possible?

I won't comment or go into the details of the dismissal. It's safe to say that their approach is not solid and the company has a history of not being transparent and honest about their decisions.

[Discussion] I have developed an app from my personal experience that can cater to mental healthcare!

So basically last year I was feeling a bit low. I really didn’t know how to become better since I had never faced this before. So I just started noting what activities I did and whom I did it with in a google doc. Slowly I also started rating how I felt about the interaction. Soon I started to notice a pattern that I felt better when I hung out with some people and when I did certain activities. This way I was able to feel much better than before and I gained confidence that I can control my own mental health. I even built an app for this so that other people can do the same .

The app is called Happyer which was made based on the above experience and provides insights into impact of a given activity or friend.

Located in Virginia, through a very large health group. I have an appointment that was scheduled 6 months out for a specialist tomorrow morning. I was called at 5:15pm-after hours-and left a message that they cancelled my appointment due to an insurance issue. I’ve called my insurance and they said there is absolutely no indication this is true. I’ve left messages for administrators and patient advocates but cannot get in touch with anyone being as it is after hours. This was a life changing appointment and I feel like the rug is being swept out from under me. Im still showing up at 8am for my appointment to offer to pay out of pocket if need be. Does anyone here have any advice/patients rights that I should be aware of/use to my advantage here?

[Question - Other] $990 for abcess drainage? Help!

Hi. Not sure if this is the right subreddit, but I (25F) got my pilonidal cyst drained at the ER on Christmas night this past year. I just couldn't take the pain anymore. I wish I didn't have to go to the hospital for it, but everywhere else was closed because it was Christmas. Plus, I don't have health insurance. I make too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford a plan on my own, even with tax credits.

All that was done was the area was numbed and the doctor made a small incision with a scalpel and pushed all the fluid out. Gauze was taped to it, and I went home.

I got a bill in the mail from the hospital for $330. I thought that was pricey, but I paid it. A couple of weeks later, I received another bill from some other place for $660.

I called and the operator I spoke to said the $330 bill was for the hospital itself. The $660 bill was for the doctor himself. I asked for an itemized statement. I received the new statement in the mail; it was broken down into two sections: $255 for the "emergency department visit" and $405 for the drainage procedure.

I just don't understand why I'm getting two different bills. Is the $255 the doctor's ER fee and then the $405 is just the procedure?

I didn't get an itemized statement from the first $330 bill because I thought it was all I was going to have to pay for such a minor procedure.

What should I do? Is there a way to bring the cost down or anything? I can't afford this. Help!

TL;DR - Uninsured. Received two bills for minor ER procedure, one for hospital ($330), one for doctor ($660). Paid the $330, can't afford the $660 and am confused on why I got two bills. Is there a way to get the cost down?

But today my mom and I were shopping for masks together, and since we didn’t know if we are going to like it, we bought one for her to see what it looks like on face, so she tried it on first, and then I tried it on as well since I liked the design. [Other] Happy U.S. healthcare story

With all that's wrong with healthcare in the U.S., I just wanted to tell you all about this deal I found. I needed to see a doctor because my lymph nodes were swollen, I had some pain and was concerned. I searched for urgent cares near me and I found this place. It's a pretty typical urgent care, but here's where it gets really cool:

After they looked at me, did a couple tests and wrote a prescription, I went to the front and the lady said "That'll be $359 for today." I shrugged and prepared to pay (still 1/3 of what it would have been at the ER, right?), and she hits me with this:

They have a membership program where I can pay $161 today, and that covers the cost of today's visit plus 3 months of membership. Membership is $39/month after that. Once you're a member any office visit is $39. That's for running tests, xrays, physicals, vaccines, and a bunch of other stuff. Here's the pamphlet: https://imgur.com/a/f7qEKvL

So basically instead of paying $359 for one a-la-carte office visit with tests, I got that same visit plus 3 months of membership for less than half that. And if I need to go back, it'll cost me $39.

I just wanted to share this story because I see so many posts complaining about the extortion racket that is big healthcare in this country, and I want people to know that these sorts of entities do exist for people who want to pay reasonable prices for their healthcare. You just have to look and maybe call around a little.

The drawback of something like this is that it isn't going to cover big things that they can't do, like major surgeries, expensive equipment (CT scans, MRIs, etc.), or other big ticket treatments. It won't help you if you get cancer or wreck your car and need a proper hospital. It also doesn't cover the cost of whatever drugs or medical equipment you may need. But if you're relatively healthy and want to be covered in case you need basic medical services, this might be something you're interested in.

What’s the point in this plan if I have to pay out of pocket anyway? [Question-insurance]

TL;DR at the bottom

Does this even make sense? And if so what can I do about it? (insurance)

I started with a new employer in September and was enrolled in Blue Cross Blue Shield LA. Enrollment was done on tbx.360 and was confusing as hell with no one to really walk me through. I went with the Blue Saver plan because I was never taught how to navigate health insurance and now I’m stuck with a $2500/$5050 deductible for me and my wife. It’s 100% co insurance, $0 co pay and we’re paying $600 per month. Excited to finally have healthcare and potentially be able to get over my anxiety, I called a therapist. She called for me and was told by BCBS that I wouldn’t have to pay out of pocket for any of our sessions. After two sessions, she calls me to let me know I’ll have to pay out of pocket until I hit my deductible.

Tl;dr: I don’t understand why I’m paying $600 per month for my wife and I’s coverage when we have to pay $5050 in services before we can even use our health insurance. I’m apparently not eligible to make any changes to my plan because I haven’t had a major life event. I’m stressed, my anxiety is through the roof, and I don’t see why I’m paying for it if I’m still paying the out of pocket cost.

[Question - insurance] Am I required to cancel my marketplace plan after getting a job?

So I have been an independent contractor for about 3 years now and have a U.S. marketplace plan with a $300 subsidy based on last year's income. I'm still hourly but just this month made the switch to full time W2 employee. I work full time hours and realize I may not be eligible for the government subsidy anymore. I'm okay with paying more for insurance and I'd like to stay on this plan but I've seen some very vague guides on the government healthcare website saying if I receive an "affordable" offer from my job I'll be required to cancel my existing plan immediately and settle for the worse insurance my employer offers.

Do I have to explicitly cancel my plan? Or can I just keep the plan I'm already enrolled in and just waive the subsidy for this year?

[Question - Insurance] Two working spouses employer offered healthcare

I am employed and have health insurance through my employer for myself and two dependents. My wife also works but has her own employer offered health insurance.

We experienced a life event and expect my wife will cease to work later this year (in a few months). She could join my plan now or wait for her job situation to change (obviously this is another life event).

Under the ACA in 2021, if she were to join my plan now while she is still employed for 2-3 months, would there be a fee associated with this for having enrolling into a spouse's plan despite having employer offered health insurance? This could be a US tax penalty/fee, or my employer fee. I am trying to figure out if there is a fee only during the months of having two plans offered (while she is still employed) or whether it's a flat penalty for having the plan outside of an employer offer one in a given year.

TLDR: if my wife plans to continue working for 3 months then quite her job and joins my employer offered health insurance plan now, will we owe something for our 2021 taxes? If so, how much and why?

[Discussion] Most countries allow residents to import unapproved medicine into their countries - under limited conditions

Many patients with conditions like ALS, Multiple Sclerosis or certain cancers who don't see improvements or a slowing of the condition with the usual treatments may look for medicines that are approved in other countries. The FDA , Health Canada, EMA and all other national agencies can take years to approve a medicine that was developed somewhere else, precious time for some patients.

This is why these agencies allow the import of such medicines that are not yet approved in their respective countries, on some conditions.

For example, a few of the conditions to import unapproved medicine into the US, as stipulated by the FDA:

- The drug is for use for a serious condition for which effective treatment is not available in the US- The drug is considered not to represent an unreasonable risk- The individual importing the drug verifies in writing that it is for his or her own use

Requirements for importing medicine into the US:

- A prescription from the patient’s treating doctor in the US- An import letter written by the patient’s treating doctor in the US- A detailed description of the treatment plan

With the help of a medical advisor and an attorney (from the Netherlands) to legal check, I've written a few short PDFs guide with all the import requirements for the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

https://thesocialmedwork.com/custom/files/import-guides/guide-importing-medicine-USA.pdf

https://thesocialmedwork.com/custom/files/import-guides/guide-importing-medicine-Canada.pdf

https://thesocialmedwork.com/custom/files/import-guides/guide-importing-medicine-Australia.pdf

https://thesocialmedwork.com/custom/files/import-guides/guide-importing-medicine-NewZealand.pdf

The PDFs are branded by the Dutch organization I work for (that sources and delivers medicines on a case-by-case basis) because they're the documents we send to our patients so they know what paperwork to arrange in order to receive their medicine.

I got approval to make it available to anyone at all since it's public information, just collected in one place, since we always get questions from people who want a certain medicine but are suspicious: "Is this even legal?? How can my doctor prescribe a medicine if it's not approved in the States?" or they need help with how an import letter should look like.

Hope they're useful to someone.

Uk health care [discussion]

I just wanted to say how impressed I’ve been by our health service. This weekend I became mentally unwell, called the helpline number as it was Sunday and doctors surgery’s closed , a doctor called back within 30mins and the spend 10 minutes locating a Sunday opening for pharmacy before sending prescription straight to the pharmacy where I picked it up for free. Part of the reason I was/am not doing great is I am undergoing ivf. I walked out of the ivf clinic this week for £1000 worth of medicines again for free at point of use. This is alongside my regular prescription which cost £300 per month.

[Question - Other] Are these online doctor services legit?

All I want is a prescription for some seroquil to help me sleep. Finding a doc in my area to give me a prescription for this shouldn't be a god damned headache, but apparently it is.

But there may be a silver lining to this dark cloud.

That's a list of the Top 10 recommended online doctor's services. They seem to be relatively affordable compared to brick & mortar clinics, but I have to ask: Are these things the real deal, or are they a complete scam? For example, will I still be protected by medical malpractice law if they give me completely bogus advice or prescriptions, or will the fact that they're online cause them to be entirely unregulated? And are there any other problems I need to consider?

And most importantly of all, are there any legit, non-scam online doctors that can take adult medicaid? Because that's my insurance? The OoP prices are still really good compared to brick & mortar docs, but it would be nice if I could reduce the price on my end even further. Their OoP prices are so low that they probably would get even more money if they took adult medicaid.

[Other] Sorry to ask for help but I’ve nowhere else to turn.

I just landed my first job as a CNA. The classes are 4 weeks at minimum wage and a 35 mile commute. I live in a rural area. 2020 has broke me and I’ve already blown through all of my money taking care of a relative who has been sick. Is there any way anyone could loan me money on here and I could pay it back when I got a check or help in any way? I have no money for food or gas when I start the job. I’m new to the medical field and a middle aged male and this seemed like something I’d like to do. I have paypal and Venmo if anyone wants to help. I just need some money basically to get on my feet. I start the job Monday. Sorry if I’m annoying anyone by posting this but I’m desperate. Thank you so much and if you can send help please send good vibes my way. I hate to ask on here but I’m desperate and down to my last resort. I know there’s a lot of nice people in the world and I’ve had it no worse than a lot of other people but I figured I’d give it a shot. Thanks.
