MRI changed price after telling me the price? [Question - Insurance]

I had to get an mri of my left foot (no contrast) so I shopped around for the best price. The best price I could find was $460 with a $46 copay. I got the price over the phone.

When I arrived for the appointment, the bill said $1260 but my copay still said $46. I asked the lady why it changed and she said the prices are not set prices. She assured me the copay was still correct and I had already gone through all of the trouble of getting my referrals transferred, making the appointment and driving there so I took her word for it.

Now a couple weeks later I got a bill in the mail saying after my $46 I paid I owe another $241. WTF? Is this legal? I can’t believe a doctors office played me like this. Is this a common thing and can I do anything about it? TIA

Doing Masters of Health Admin, Feel mildly screwed, advice [Question-other]

So this is my first semester as a grad student. Found out this masters only takes you up if you have clinical experience or connections. I plan on applying to a health administrative fellowship once I graduate so that I can get a leg up. I know fellowships only accept those with experience.

I also am applying to jobs as I just graduated from a bachelors of health science. I'm looking for entry-level health positions like unit secretary, medical receptionist, patient rep, care coordinator, medical scribe, insurance specialist, billing/coding, etc. Trying to get my foot in the door during covid and deeply desperate.

That's not even the real problem. The real problem is actually having the chance to work on a team on a project in a well-paid position (I'm talking 90k+) by the time I graduate with my masters. I know I can work in a pharmaceutical company as a manager or coordinator and get paid a good sum because these industries are rising.

My worst fear is being stuck a receptionist for the rest of my life. Especially after 4 yrs of studying. Will I be making less than 75k-80k a year? Will all that time and money in school be worth nothing?

This semester I got lucky and didn't pay tuition as I'm doing part-time classes. As I get older, I'm running my options now to see if I can swap to another masters in other fields like speech pathologist, nurse practitioner, physical therapist, or physician assistant. Physician assistant would be my last option since I still have 3 pre-reqs (Orgo I, Orgo II, Biochem), patient care hours, and a GRE to get out the way. My science GPA isn't amazing either, I got 2-3 C's maybe one more and took an S for COVID. Patient care hours would require a license in something which means more debt, more school, and mental fatigue. Pay is very good. Admissions for these grad schools would be uncertain since I passed the typical acceptance cycle.

If I were to switch from my current masters I would get the clinical experience and maybe just work my way up through management on the job rather than through a degree. Should I stop backing out of the MHA, take it like a boss, get the experience, and try my best to move up? Or should I get clinical degree to stick with a 65k-80k clinical job or 100k if I do PA and then think about the manager experience when I'm like 50? LOL I'm so unorganized on my future.

Edit: For those of questioning my motives, Yea I'm looking for a well-paid position even if I won't enjoy it. I know every type of work comes with ups and downs, but if it pays me well that won't bother me so much. It will if I'm getting paid garbage for all that time spent in school which I could have spent equally the same in something else that would pay me generously.

[Other] Does anyone have experience with getting their MHA from an online CAHME accredited university and finding an administrative fellowship or some type of internship in the state they live in?

There are no CAHME accredited MHA programs in Arizona so I would be forced to do one online. The one that I would choose would be the Master of Health Administration in Health Systems Management from George Mason University.

It worries me that I won't have networking opportunities in Arizona as the program is online and in (Virginia)?

Not sure what the best decision is here, my other option would be to pursue a Master of Public Health in Health Services Administration from the University of Arizona. However, I've read the MPH degrees aren't that profitable and may not be the most related to health administration.

[Question - Other] What healthcare career is suited to my interests?

Hello!

I have been trying to decide what a good healthcare career would be for me, but I simply have not been able to decide.

I want a healthcare career that works with kids/young children primarily, with regular hours, in the outpatient or school setting, with little to no physical contact. I would prefer working with a healthy population. I don’t want to give bad news on a regular basis. I don’t think I could deal with hard emotions and heartbreak too well. I need a low stress occupation. I would prefer some variety in my job. I have been considering a career as a Physician Assistant (pediatric specialty), School Speech Language Pathologist, School Psychologist, or Registered Dietician (possible specialty areas I am considering include food/nutrition services/management, school, outpatient, sports, eating disorders). I am interested in preventative care, treatment, and health management.

Any other suggestions? Do any of these match my interests?

Thank you for the help, it is greatly appreciated! :)

[Other] History - How America Got Employer Sponsored Health Insurance

hey all,

for my audio weekly newsletter this week, i talk about how we got this messy, employer based healthcare system in the first place.

it's interesting - health insurance isn't like any other private insurance, like car insurance, where it's just another thing you pay for. Instead, it's tied up in this employer based system that nobody likes.

in my newsletter today, i give the six minute history of how this system developed

[Question - Insurance] Is it legal for an insurance company(namely BCBSIL) to approve coverage for a medication Jan-Aug and then abruptly cease coverage in Sept under the ACA?

Added info: I’ve been told by an insurance broker that they are “not allowed” to do this, because they choose Theo “formulary list” Jan 1. But I’m wondering if it’s legal. I’m not looking to sue—I realize I wouldn’t win that battle anyways. However, this drug is essential to my daily functioning, so I would appreciate if it didn’t happen again. If there is some legal ground I could stand on, I feel that may help my case in saying, “please cover my needed meds.” (Of course I would seek proper legal counsel should I find that something here was not appropriate) Thank you!

Universally Scented Products

I'm trying to make all my hygiene products the same scent. For example, cinnamon soap, cinnamon mints, cinnamon deodorant, cinnamon lip balm, etc. (I think cinnamon plumps your lips, so maybe just neutral lip blam) This will make it so my different hygiene products do not contradict each other and create an unpleasant smell. Right now, I'm thinking of using Dr. Bronner's Soap, and Simply Gum Mints. (I prefer mints to gum) Has anyone else attempted this, and if so, how did it go? I'm having a bit of trouble deciding the right scent and finding natural and healthy hygiene products that all have that same scent or flavor. Do you think this is a good idea?

Natural deodorant and sweating problems

I recently decided that I have wanted to start working towards using natural products, even making some of them myself. I started using a shampoo bar based off a recommendation I saw in this sub and am loving it, and am hoping to get the rest of my hair care routine down using all natural products.

Once I do that I think I will feel confident moving onto other things. One that I really would like to make work is deodorant because of the aluminum in antiperspirant. A few years ago I tried the Native brand, and it felt good, smelled amazing, and kept me from smelling all day when I wore it. Odor wise, it is the best deodorant I have used. The reason I stopped using it though, is that I sweat BAD. Although I didn't smell, I ended up getting nasty armpit stains on almost all of my shirts over the course of the stick I used. The stains permanently discolored the clothes and made the material feel dirty, like sweat build up was in it, no matter how many washes it had.

Is there a way to avoid this? I get that without the antiperspirant aspect there will be some sweating, but I really, really don't want to have nasty pit stains in all of my shirts either.

[Discussion] The Coming Revolution: Blockchain and Healthcare. Part I

By: David Randall, Ph.D.

(David Randall is Executive Director and Resident Scholar with the American Research and Policy Institute in Washington, DC. His published peer-reviewed research focuses on health care entitlements, health data analytics and the application of health information technology. Dr. Randall also serves as an Advisory Board member of the Solve.Care Foundation).

The global and U.S. healthcare marketplace is huge! With over 8 trillion dollars spent globally and over 3 trillion in the U.S in 2018, the numbers represent spending that dwarfs most industry segments. Herein lie the opportunity and associated challenges in applying new financing regimes that can potentially represent a fundamental shift in how health care is financed using decentralized financing (DeFi) and distributed ledger technology (DLT). As a result of the amount of money associated with the many facets of health care financing, there is an almost endless set of use cases to deploy DeFi solutions using DLT and a token environment that promotes community involvement and transparency that is lacking today.

DeFi has exploded in its use and popularity in the last few months as evidenced by the rapid issuance of governance tokens and projects. DeFi may be defined as the movement that promotes the use of decentralized networks and open-source software to create multiple types of financial services and products.

The current traditional financing environment can best be characterized as centralized as directly evidenced by the volume of financing across major industry groups controlled by large money-center banking institutions. Much of their activity and pricing remain opaque and largely profitable, even in a long-term low interest rate environment. DeFi changes this equation by providing transparency in lending and borrowing as well as introducing community-based involvement in lending to set standards and rates through the use of governance mechanisms such as token voting.

The healthcare system in the U.S and around the world is complex, expensive, and fragmented in a myriad of financing mechanisms. Blockchain technology applications have the potential to transform our current use of health information technology and the associated hardware and software infrastructure, as suggested by published peer-reviewed research. The underlying technology and associated cryptocurrency with its decentralized architecture suggest a range of applications that can bring cost savings and efficiencies versus traditional legacy systems currently in use in not only the public healthcare space but also in associated private market participants. There are numerous applications that can be implemented in public programs in the U.S. healthcare system using blockchain technology.

The fundamental promise of the blockchain is the underlying information technology (IT) architecture and its ‘unbreakable’ chain of data entries that allow for secure and open transactions. The decentralized and distributed database of a blockchain that contains data allows for an auditable and distributed ledger that allows all to see every transaction. The open-source attributes of the blockchain make the technology a natural fit for the requirements associated with the complexities of transaction laden systems associated with health information technology in the public and private sectors.

The acknowledged complexity and technology limitations of centralized IT systems naturally lend themselves to the use of blockchain as outlined. I suggest these same limitations of legacy IT systems also extend to the financing regimes currently in use by legacy IT firms and accompanying finance partners. Because of the almost natural monopolies that many of these large industry players have in many healthcare markets, their profit margins are often large by most metrics. These margins represent a market inefficiency that current market participants naturally exploit and hence represents an opportunity for a DeFi solution for healthcare financing and direct community lending.

The health financing and insurance marketplace is large and diverse and inefficient in many respects. The administrative costs of maintaining the infrastructure surrounding the many types of health care financing are arguably enormous. Here lies the potential opportunity in using a decentralized financing system to eliminate the inefficiencies and thus reduce costs to benefits of market participants, most notably the patients and end-users of provider services and products.

The emergence of telehealth as a means of healthcare delivery represents a potential paradigm shift in the use of health providers and remote services. Blockchain and DLT offer the ability to integrate the delivery of services and products that have the ability to connect patient and provider data for ease of use in contrast to current siloed data systems. There is almost an endless number of use cases that can arguably be used by DeFi to address market inefficiencies and provide better price discovery and potential benefits to DeFi market participants.

The medical equipment leasing market is estimated at $14 Billion in 2019 and is expected to grow at 10-15% in the next five years. In the U.S alone the market for these services is estimated at $4 Billion with growth rates above general health care expenditures. The growth and relative stability of the medical equipment market present a unique opportunity for a blockchain DeFi solution to deploy its range of already developed products on the blockchain and apply a decentralized financing application to further leverage the utility of a native token.

The market for medical equipment leasing is a natural fit for a DeFi application because there is a tremendous demand by providers to meet the demand of patients for devices and equipment. The existing market is fragmented with limited price transparency and market inefficiencies. This is where the use of DeFi can meet these market imbalances and specifically how the use of a token and platform can meet the needs of market participants like device manufacturers and providers seeking to get much-needed devices in the hands of patients.

[Question-Insurance] NEED NOW

I've been back and forth with Marketplace.gov since March. I was dropped from my moms insurance Nov 2019 (I think she had Medicare because she is disabled) but they did it right as enrollment closed and I had filed for an appeal. Didn't think to apply for Special Enrollment because I thought they made a mistake (I was supposed to stay on her insurance until 26) but it ended up that I was denied again for "making too much." I've tried applying for Special Enrollment after I got out of unemployment from being furloughed. Denied. Appealed. Denied. Appealed again. Now I'm waiting, in the end of September. I know I can apply Nov. 1st but I need short term insurance until January 1st 2021. I live in TN, I'm 24, non-smoker, no pre-existing conditions and have had a steady job since I was around 19/20. I get recurrent UTIs but I think mine might've become a Kidney infection and I need a urologist and possibly an ER visit if I keep getting worse. I was looking at Golden Rule and Farm Bureau but if you have advice please help. Thank you.

[Discussion] Dizziness that doesn't want to go (M 19)

Hello guys hope you're doing great. I am 19 years old. I have some respiratory problems since I was a kid and in August I got sick and I started breathing heavily with my left lung, I did some rays and I just got a flu, not any covid thing or something. I took a treatment, I was breathing normally until it came back one night when I got scared and I couldn t breathe properly, I felt something at my left lung and I fainted I think because of the lack of oxygen and I think I hit my head because after 4 days from this faint, I got dizziness and feeling of fainting again, some kind of lightheadness and losing my balance when I stand up. And it is kinda permanent, sometimes I feel it more, sometimes less but it s annoying and I want to recover from this. I am taking vitamins but I don t really know what to take or what to do. What do you suggest? Please help

Using asmanex[question-other]

Hey ya'll, just want to hear from others there experience from using this inhaler. Recently, the dr prescribed it to me via an over the phone diagnosis. I do not have or had a history of asthma. I explained to the dr I have been coughing here and there since the last time I've been sick and she said this medicine would work for me. I read the side affects and it says I can get the flu and all these other symptoms that I don't even have. Should I be worried? Its only 100mg and needs to be taken once every night for 2 weeks.

CDC Publishes — Then Withdraws — Guidance On Aerosol Spread Of Coronavirus
The CDC says the guidelines were posted to its website in error. The now-deleted updates were notable because so far the agency has stopped short of saying that the virus is airborne.

[Question - Other]

My breasts both have some little bruises on them but I don’t know how they got there. I’ve pretty much been in bed all week due to a broken toe. Should I be worried?

[Question - Other] Finding doctors for unexplained chronic pain in a time of covid?

My girlfriend (33F) has had unexplained chronic pain for about 3 months now. She describes it as being pretty much everywhere; from her wrists and hands to her back, shoulders, and legs. At this point we have tried going to a few urgent cares, a rheumatologist, and an orthopedic specialist, and no one will see her even though she has tested negative three separate times for coronavirus and we show them her most recent result. She is also immunocompromised unfortunately, so she gets sick fairly often anyways which makes it hard to get a physician to see her (even though we have the negative test). However, I totally understand the precaution there.

I don't understand how people who have chronic pain like hers can't be seen in person? We have been turned away so may times we are running out of options. Is there anything specific we need to do or say to finally get a doctor to see her strange pains? Maybe we need to be testing her much more frequently? I just don't want it to be something serious that we could have gotten help for earlier.

Thanks!
