[Question - Other] tried looking online about something that happened to me recently.

alright so I have tried to Google into this a bit. haven't really found anything specific to what happened to me though. this has happened only once, a little over a week ago. was sitting on the couch with my girlfriend. my hands started to feel tingly. didn't think much of it. then moments later my feet too. then my legs. even my face and lips. basically everything but my chest, stomach had began all tingling at once. so then concern set in. I started to feel nauseated and had to rush to the bathroom where I immediately threw up 2 or 3 times. at this point I'm still tingling and now just completely drenched in sweat. I lay down on the bathroom floor, cold tile felt nice. then both of my hands clenched up. it was more like 2 of my fingers and thumb had clenched together. and it was painful. at this point I'm screaming in pain and had to yell for help from my girlfriend. she rushes in and I lift up my hands and beg for her to pry apart my fingers. she literally used every bit of strength she could and they wouldn't budge. this went on for about 3 minutes. I had her bring me a bag of vegetables to rest my sweaty head on and some cold water that she had to pour in my mouth. so after about 3-5 minutes I was fine. glad it didn't last long but it was a terrible scary experience. was thinking I was gonna have a seizure or go into shock or something. as I said been a little over a week since that all happened, thankfully has not happened again. did my best looking online. didn't find much. if anything. a few sites mentioned panic attacks but we were literally just relaxing on the couch. so ever since it happened its just kind of bothered me that I don't know wtf caused all that. and I'd like to try to find out more in case it ever does happen again.

Best natural deodorant?

So...i've tried a lot of natural deodorants over the years, and none of them have really worked well enough for me. I'm currently using Malin + Goetz deodorant, it works for 3-4 hours and then it basically feels like I never even put deodorant on. I'm slightly interested in trying Aesop's spray deodorant but I'm not sure if it will be any better. Any advice is appreciated!

PLEASE HELP: Covered California Insurance Confusion

I found out on 7/16 that I am permanently laid off from my job. I was told I’d have my work health benefits until the end of the month. This week I applied for a marketplace health plan to start in August through Covered California.

I entered all my info in correctly, but I’m seeing that my health care plan effective start date is the 1st of September. I’m so confused! I need coverage to start the 1st of August. I can’t risk going a month without insurance right now. Is this a mistake on Covered California’s part? I’m going to call in the morning because they are closed now, but I’m freaking out because it makes no sense to me that they would expect me to skip a month of coverage, especially when I’m applying before August has even started. My qualifying life event was loss of employer based coverage.

Has this happened to anyone else? I couldn’t find any info about something like this, but it says on their website that coverage should start the 1st of the month after you’ve enrolled. Some life events seem to require you to enroll by the 15th, but not for loss of insurance. It seems insane that they’d expect people to simply be okay with agreeing to skipping a month of coverage. Do you think a call with them when they’re open would be able to fix this error? Thanks for any insight, and stay safe everyone!

[Other] Seeking physicians to participate in documentary about physician distress and moral injury

Hello,

My name is Noah. I am an NYU film student creating my feature length, final year documentary on the topic of physician distress, a condition which in the past has been called "burnout" or more recently: "moral injury."

I am looking for physicians in the New York area to participate in this piece, which will shoot in the spring or whenever covid-19 allows us to do so safely.

Potential subjects must have experience with moral injury symptoms, which may include: * Exhaustion * Cynicism about their profession * Drops in productivity * Overall declines in mental health

My hope is for this film to be a very personal, humanizing portrait of three physicians. We would ask our subjects to sit down in front of the camera for formal interviews to talk about their journeys through their medical careers as well as their experiences with moral injury. We would also like to follow them with the camera during their work shift to capture their daily experiences on duty. Finally, we would also request one or two shoot days outside of the work place, during which we follow you with the camera inside the home or during a favorite hobby / past time of yours.

More about the doc & story rationale:

For years, we have been aware of an epidemic that runs rampant among our physicians, symptoms of which include exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased productivity. Since the 70s, we have labelled this issue “physician burnout.” However, as we become more conscious of the problem and begin to combat it, the issue, including physician suicide rates that double the national average, has only seemed to worsen. Only recently have we begun referring to physician distress as “moral injury,” a phrase that was first used to describe soldiers in war, people forced to commit unspeakable acts that contradict their deeply held moral beliefs. Similarly, doctors are asked to go against their hippocratic convictions and compromise patient care due to systemic mandates outside of their control. How we frame this topic is of utmost significance. Using the term "burnout" places the blame and burden of solving the problem on physicians individually, whereas the phrase "moral injury" indicates that there are external, systemic issues at play. As doctors in our culture are expected to resiliently and silently endure their distress, this film aspires to instill upon audiences a sense of empathy for physicians, to humanize them in a way that is scarcely seen.

More sources on physician moral injury:

https://khn.org/news/beyond-burnout-docs-decry-moral-injury-from-financial-pressures-of-health-care/

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/927859

I feel that moral injury among medical professionals remains an incredibly urgent yet underexplored topic.

As such, I hope that you will consider the importance of this topic as well as our passion to tell this story. Please feel free to Reddit DM me if interested. I would like to meet with each potential subject individually via Skype at your convenience.

I also would be happy to show you my student credentials, including my NYU email, through a DM chat.

Thank you for your time,

[Question - Other] Friend (55yo male) having trouble breathing and getting around, waking up on the floor from fainting, coughing phlegm, body swelling. Lives alone and won't go to the ER or anything because he no health insurance. Any ideas on what I can tell him?

He doesn't want to go bankrupt going in for this because he is just hoping it will get better. He thinks if it's so bad that he needed to go in then it will probably take all his assets so his kids inherit nothing. He lives in Oklahoma, USA.

He look out money from his investments while unemployed to build his house which counts as "income" but it's all used up, this meant ACA insurance would be completely unaffordable and won't qualify for Medicaire-- plus he's outside any enrollment period. Then covid-19 ruined the job market so he couldn't go get a job... and no unemployment since he was already out of work for a while. He's kind of gotten himself in a mess inadvertently.

Now something's bad going on with his health. He said breathing problems began back in October but in the last week or so everything's gotten much much worse. Does he have financial options that won't ruin him? He is more concerned about leaving his kids something than his own health/life and it's so sad. I don't know what to say.

My fiancee and I are currently on her COBRA plan from being laid off due to the pandemic. Ordinarily I'd just start looking now and applying so that we never lose coverage, however we're getting married on September 6. Should we just wait until after we're married to start applying for insurance? Or should we start applying now anyways?

[Discussion] Incremental government regulation and book recommendations

Why doesn’t the US have any prominent policy conversations about going to a Dutch or even Swiss style healthcare system? It seems like a lot of public discord is rightfully about pushing for single payer but very little about all payer rate setting nationally. I know there is a Vox article about it playing out in some states but it seems like a easy thing for Joe Biden to make amends towards. Kamala Harris kinda was nudging at it last year but got squeezed out of the conversation quick.

I get that it can be a little wonky to make a political stand for but it feels like a easy to swallow transition to cheaper healthcare system without disrupting our current system. We would essentially regulate the current insurers to guarantee service and costs but keep everyone with their plans.

Also, does anyone have any book recommendations that go more in depth about the US Healthcare system at more of an intermediate understanding?

Thanks!

Uninsured in the US (my fault) [other]

Hi All,

New to this sub and wanted to vent, hope this is the right place.

I have been a primary school teacher for almost five years, but instead of taking the expensive health care offered (with high deductibles), I always opted in for dental and out for general coverage because if you don’t take the healthcare, you get an extra $300 or so per paycheck. A cash in lieu of situation. And I’m young (30 now) and healthy. I figured I’d get healthcare at another time.

Well, then COVID came around and I figured I should get some kind of coverage (I know, I should have taken the healthcare to begin with), but thought I’d wait until the school year was up. I made the decision not to go back to school this year and instead take unpaid leave, and headed to stay with family for the year instead (lots of family and personal issues contributed to this decision, I’ve been applying for online teaching jobs for awhile). Once my school year ended, I went to the Marketplace (Affordable Care in the US) website and tried to enroll. Unfortunately, because I didn’t have healthcare before, moving is not a big enough life change to be able to enroll mid year. So, I guess if I get sick, I’ll just have to deal with a big chunk of a bill.

Many, many Americans have it much, much worse. And it’s a shame that so many are uninsured, underinsured, lost healthcare due to being laid off, or make just a bit too much to qualify for Medicaid. And it isn’t going to get any better, Biden has stated he doesn’t support Healthcare for all.

Anyway. Thanks for reading.

[Discussion] I've been through a lot lately and it seems it's been stressing me out so much (M 19)

I can not control it, I've been really stressed lately. A weeks ago I was on weekend holidays with my girlfriend and friends, we had fun, everything was great. In about last day of staying there, my right testicle was a little sensitive but I did not pay enough attention to it because it is normal for men. While i was having a shower with my girlfriend and while i was washing myself, I felt a little bump on my right testicle. I freaked out so much and had no mood till the rest of the day. It was Sunday, so there was no option seeking the doctor. This situation stressed me like crazy, I did not eat a day, because i did not know what it was. On monday, when i came home, i googled it and thats when the stress started to increase. I was going through a mental stress. On tuesday, I decides to seek the doctor with my mom. Long story short, it was nothing serious, it was just a basic bump of some bloodcells or whatever, nothing dangerous. I felt reborn.

It was hard to handle this much of a stress and still is, but this is what happened next. Yesterday I was drinking water and I drank it somehow badly, that thw chug was hurtful. I was having pain all day long, again all stressed because I did not know what it could be. I dont know, i always stress when it comes to my health. I decided to visit a medical centre where i described my problem, yet they added they will measure my blood pressure just in case. 140/90 - 129 pulses. I was sooooo stressed, my heart bumped like a crazy because i did now know what the doctor would tell me. I could not calm myself, not even for a bit. He then did a cardiograph and sent me to the urgent ambulance. - My throat was painful and now Iam going to the urgent ambulance? These were my thoughts. All stressed, couldnt do anything. When i got to the ambulance, doctor took a cardiograph again and wanted me to tell her what happened. I told her my throat was painful and that I am all stressed because i dont know what to expect and that I am worried and hope for nothing serious. I told her that I am really stressed and that last week i was seeking doctors as well because of my testicle and that its been a lot for me lately, yet she saw how stressed i was, Ive been given a magnesium to my blood via infusion to calm down a bit. She then took a samples of my blood that went to the laboratories if my heart enzymes were all okay. I was laying there on the bed, stressed out with the infusion going to my vein waiting for the tests from the doctor. At the meantime i was sent to the X ray scan. After doing all this and going back to the doctor, she said everything is fine. My cardiograph was all fine, only my heart was bumping faster. My enzymes were all good as well. They did not find anything on the xray scan. I felt reborn again. I was so stressed you could not imagine and it just fell off.

A day after this, so today, I woke up, have thoughts about my last week and how stressful iland how scared i was. Later this evening, i went to my grandma to have my blood pressure checked and i had 140/92 - 103 pulses. She said it is high and that i should seek a cardiologist - this stressed me again, I felt anxiety and stress. My parents are firefighters ans they know something about these things and they said my blood pressure can be high because of the hard week i had and even when i think i am calm I am not, because it is my body. Now I am again afraid of my health because of the pressure and idk what to do. ( I used to work out, do cardio and used to be active, but i havent done any of these for a long time. Ive gained a few kilos.) Should i really be worried about my high blood pressure and stressed or is it normal thing that can be treated or reduced? Can it be because of the last week of mine / not working out, gaining weight, eating junk)? I am thinking about starting to train again, because I am really worried. What should i do? Thank you.

Repairing red, sun damaged skin

The skin on my upper chest is slightly red and patchy from years of poor sun protection. I am in my late 20s and I have now changed my ways. I don't have any dark spots.

In looking for daily serums to apply, I see a lot of products made to fade wrinkles, eliminate dark spots, and hydrate mature skin. My skin is still young; I just want to stimulate healthy cell growth and reduce the redness.

I've seen recommendations about antioxidant oil, vitamin C, and vitamin A/retinol, but I am not sure the best one to choose. If I had to choose one natural serum a day, what would you recommend?

If anyone else also has this problem: I use Gypsy Cream from the Good Stuff Botanicals a few times a week and it is excellent. I am just looking for a serum as well so that I can apply it to my chest and have it absorb instantly so that I can immediately put my clothes on over it and not have it stain or feel sticky.

Thank you!

[Discussion] Do any of you use or know of a good app to keep ongoing communication with your team?

Hey!

Surgical Tech here - Our leadership is looking for alternatives to things like morning huddles because packing the entire OR staff into a small space doesn't exactly adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Outside of that, some of our practices just seem archaic in light of the fact that everyone has a smartphone in their pocket- like the daily schedule and on-call assignments are just taped to an office door; reference materials are scattered in binders across the OR, etc.

My thought is to digitize as much of that stuff as possible so that it all becomes searchable content that we carry in our pocket; and with the sudden demand and development that has gone into conferencing tech, now seems like a great time to modernize. The catch there is that it seems like conferencing tech is mostly focused on video communication, which imo is super overrated because the content of that meeting is lost as soon as it's spoken. Or even if the video is saved, the content therein isn't searchable.

So, I'm looking for an app with the following features:

  • Compatible with iPhone, Android, Windows, and Apple OS, so that team members can access it regardless of which device they're using.

  • Structured like a forum. For example, the on-call schedule could be posted as a thread for everyone to reference; and inside that thread we could discuss things like trading call shifts for that period.

  • Intuitive interface. The success of this idea would be dependent on people actually using it, which they're not going to do if they don't feel like it's easy and convenient.

  • Secure? I'd like your opinion on this one... We'd need at least a basic username/password setup so people could use their actual names, but beyond that, idk. The schedule has HIPAA protected info on it (pt names, etc) - can that be posted on a 3rd party application if just has a password login required to access? Some special encryption or authentication? I'm definitely not proficient with IT, but this stands out as a potential obstacle. My thought is it'd be best to just delete or black out HIPAA info before posting, but that'd be another step people would have to take, and again, they won't use it if it isn't easy.

  • This one might be a tall order, but some kind of document reading capability would be incredible. The folks running the office do a lot of work on excel, so being able to upload an excel document so the contents are visible as an OP (as opposed to a file that would need to be downloaded and opened to be viewable) would help their end.

Do any of you use or know of a good option? Or if you have experience with your team attempting something like this- any do's or do not's to share?

If you haven't used something like this, would you? Or would it just be seen as another unnecessary step to further complicate the day?

Thanks all!!

Training your hair to not be greasy!

During this quarantine started the method of detoxing my scalp to produce less oil because some people will commented on how greasy my hair would look or like I looked like I didn't shower (even though I literally washed my hair) and that make me feel very insecure (it's stupid I know).

Anyways It's been 4 months now and I'm so happy about my results. I used to wash my hair every other day or even next day and now I only wash my hair once a week. Yay!! Although process is not easy because your scalp gets very greasy and uncomfortable but if you feel insecure about how greasy your hair feels I fully recommend you to try this :) so worth it!

However I've been thinking to try to only wash my hair once a month haha do you think this is healthy for my hair? o better stick to only once a week?

Why natural skin care is important ?

Natural skin care is very important as problems of acne, zits and pimples can only be avoided via daily Face care.

Acne is defines as an inflammatory disorder of the sebaceous (oil) glands, located under the skin.

When glandular activity increases, the glands start to secrete more sebum than normal, the sebum becomes trapped under the skin, the gland gets broken, spilling sebum, this irritates the soft skin and pimple forms.

Acne starts to affect several body parts, face, back, neck and chest. All of these types of acne can be easily treated just learn the remedies.
