[discussion] Health care in America is dysfunctional — but its lack of transparency is downright dangerous. Getting health care in this country is still so circuitous it often does feel like a secret — a maze deciphered in private that's never quite mastered.

[Question - Insurance] How do I go about appealing charges?

My dilemma concerns “surprise billing.” Serious answers only, please. Desperately need some advice.

Before I say anything, I cannot emphasize enough how thankful I am that this is only $2,500 whereas many other Americans have emergency hospitalization and surgery that takes them way into the five digit range.

I break my wrist in October and it requires surgery. I know my HDHP’s deductible and OOP max. I believe I was just short of the OOP max before my initial ER visit but had definitely met my deductible. Either way, to find an orthopedic surgeon, I use the health system’s website to “find a provider.” Mind you the physicians listed are all “health system owned” and since I am an employee of the health system, this would be a tier 1 physician. We find the surgeon and her address and phone number. We schedule an appointment at the outpatient orthopedic office which then leads us to surgery at an outpatient surgical facility. Things go as normal and I’m in a cast for 3 weeks (metal plates instead of pins and a hard cast).

A month later I receive a bill from a facility I’m not familiar with but the name gives it away as orthopedic -related. It’s a bill for $2000. I also get an EOB and it shows that overall the surgery cost about $26,000. The health system-owned physician’s charges are covered 100% (expected because I know my insurance and whatnot!). Luckily my insurance covered $24k of the $26k charged by the OP facility and I am left to pay what my insurance did not. Like I previously stated, I understand $2k is decently manageable and it could be WAY worse but considering I have already paid close to $5k out of pocket for the entire year, I found it surprising.

A call to the claims company told me that the OP facility is tier 2. This is where my problem is and where I believe I have some ammo. I used the website. I find an owner provider. “Okay, cool” I think, all should be grand. How in the world can they list a tier 1 provider with a tier 2 address!? I would have NEVER chose her if I had known this.

In all honesty, I’m not looking for the bill to be erased. I understand having to fork over a few hundred. Mind you I also have a $500 bill from the anesthesiologist which was likely tier 2 as well.

TL;DR Trying to appeal the charges not covered by insurance because the facility was tier 2 (as opposed to the ortho surgeon I found on my hospital systems website being tier 1).

Who do I contact first? Do I call and/or write? Tips? Things to remember? Anything is helpful!

Alternatives to Henna/how do I use Henna?

Hi everyone, first-time poster and lurker here, but I finally have a question.

I wonder if you'd know about other natural alternatives for hair dye? I've tried the Lush Henna bar, left it on my head for 3 hours and...it didn't cover my grays at all. Maybe if I'm generous, it tinted them? But not enough to have any noticeable difference, given the amount of effort.

Basically I only use hair dye to touch up my grays once they grow out about 2 inches at the root (I started graying young). I have relatively thick and black east Asian hair. I used to use a dye I bought in the store that would develop and do the job in 30 minutes, and not be so messy, but I'm scared of those recent headlines about hair chemicals and cancer so I'm trying to switch. I still definitely want to cover my roots as they're really noticeable against black hair.

So my questions are:

  1. Are there other permanent hair dye (Grey touch up) natural options other than Henna? (preferably one that isn't so messy, and if possible something that doesn't take more than 3 hours) that is strong enough to dye my Grey's? Even if I don't use the Lush bar, and use powdered Henna, it will probably be just as messy.

  2. Since this is only the second time I've used henna I understand I may just have done it wrong. I mixed the solid bar with enough hot water to melt it into a cream like texture and applied it on my roots (as best I could) and wrapped my head in cling wrap (are there alternatives to this so I don't use plastic?), then let it develop for 3 hours before washing it out. Is there something I should be doing differently?

  3. I read that to touch up grays I should also try dyinf my hair with red Henna first and only after with the black, but if the black barely covers my Greys, would the red first actually be effective? Or is this a marketing ploy to get me to buy two types of Henna instead of one?

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

[Question - Insurance] ACA Marketplace Canceled My Moms Plan

Hi! So to start with last year my mom's employed based healthcare was canceled. Thus she enrolled in an ACA plan. There was only one option for her because she has a pre-existing condition. They enrolled in this plan, but it was terrible. Thus my parents decided to switch her coverage to Anthem that had just moved into our area for 2019.

A couple of weeks later they receive welcome packets for both companies, so my Dad calls the marketplace to cancel her old plan (Approx. December 15th). Today (12/20/19) my parents received a letter from Anthem telling them that the marketplace has canceled her plan effective (1/1/20).

Tonight my dad has talked to both the marketplace and anthem. I have spoken with her past insurer to guarantee that her plan has been canceled effective (1/1/20). When my dad spoke with the marketplace they basically didn't say much but said that it would be escalated and they would get back to my mom in 30 days. Since my mom will be uninsured for 30 days while they investigate this, what are her options and what can we do?

For reference, my parents do not receive any credits or tax breaks for these plans.

TLDR: It looks like the marketplace incorrectly canceled a policy, and as a result, my mom will be uninsured while they escalate it which they said could be up to 30 days.

How to deal with greasy hair?

Hi, first time asking anything and I don't know what to expect either. I'm sorry if it's been already asked. My hair is really greasy to the point 24hs after washing, it looks as if I haven't done it in a week at least. I managed to extend that to 48hs with a solid bar of shampoo but that was in Argentina. I'm currently (and will be for a long time) in Canada. I'd rather not have to import anything since idk when extra fees apply. Does anyone have a go-to? It'd be better if its for sensitive skin since I have no idea what triggers my itchy scalp.

Thanks a lot in advance and I'm sorry if it's a big chunk of text, I'm on mobile.

Shine reduction

TLDR: What do you use for shine reduction that fits in your purse or pocket?

I'm a minimalist when it comes to makeup, but I need to put something on my forehead to keep it from becoming an oil slick. I don't wear foundation, just a moisturizer with mineral sunscreen (Yes To Carrots) during the day. I'm white and I'm not actively trying to look more pale or tan. I've tried blotter papers, but it feels like I go through an entire pack trying to mattify my forehead and nose, and then the shine is back in an hour. Currently, I use Neutrogena Shine Control Powder, but I hate how wasteful the packaging is. I'm going to try a DIY cornstarch-based recipe for home use, but I'm still looking for a pressed powder that fits in a reusable compact for my purse. Does anyone have a favorite brand for such a thing? I've tried Honeybee Gardens (love their mascara!) but the powder was heavier coverage than I am looking for and the compact shape and design drove me crazy. All of my Google searches turn up major cosmetic brands that are trying to set existing makeup or function as a foundation, but they're EXPENSIVE for something I'm still experimenting with and they sound like heavy-coverage products. I just want something light and cruelty-free to keep me from looking like a greasy mess.

Natural deodorant with EO allergy?

Hi all! I switched to natural, aluminum free deodorant for good around March/April of this year after a seventeen year struggle to find something that worked for my body. I started with Toms, which didn't work even a month in, switched to Schmidt's, which worked wonderfully but turned my yellow work shirts dark brown (irreversibly) in three wears. I then tried Meow Meow Tweet, which was both expensive and did not work, homemade (all around no), crystal which did nothing, and then I tried Myro. Myro was working great for almost two months. I purchased a refill and another whole tube to leave in my school bag last week, when suddenly I started developing a rash? My underarms are super red and raw, and have been peeling for three days now. I noticed some peeling last week but chalked it up to something with the fabric I wore that day. I do not use anything with baking soda to avoid irritation, and I am not allergic to any ingredients, so I suspect it's an allergy to the essential oils. I am desperate to find something that works. At this point, I do not care the price. Does anyone have experiences similar to this? How did you go about healing/what product did you switch to? I do not want to switch back to aluminum- please help! TIA

Deodorant & pimples?

I've been through the typical deodorant whirlwind trying everything without finding one that works. The biggest problem, though, is the ones that have caused breakouts/acne and irritation. Kopari and Schmidt's regular (charcoal & magnesium) gave me pimples. Kopari doesn't have baking soda while Schmidt's does, and both have coconut oil. Kopari has a whole bunch of other possibly irritating ingredients like fragrances, propylene glycol, etc, so I'm confused about what could be the problem.

To be honest I don't want to keep spending so much money on finding the right one, so I'd love some advice. Should I do the Schmidt's sensitive next? Or Tom's unscented? Or something else? Help. Lol.

[Discussion] How private is US healthcare?

I've been very annoyed and concerned about the current state of american healthcare and I can't tell whether or not the industry is very privatized or not. It seems that they will say it's private but it might be the situation of doublespeak. There's so much regulation and control on the situation that it may have been monopolized by both and that leads to high costs and low competition. (political part) Are socialist democrats criticizing a heavily regulated system and propose fixing it by not clearing out regulation and instead making other people pay for it?

DIY Rose Toner Recipe

Ingredients:

Witch Hazel, Rose Water, Lavender Essential Oil *optional, Tea Tree Essential Oil *optional, Small Spray Bottle

For this recipe, begin by filling your container 3 quarters of the way with rose water and then the remaining space with witch hazel. Rose water can be hard to find and the best place to get it is usually at an ethnic store. I picked up mine at a local indian store. When buying rose water, be sure to check the ingredients on the back as some brands add in unnecessary preservatives and chemicals and make sure that the only ingredients are rose petals and purified water. Rose water is very calming for the skin, while witch hazel relieves inflammation and skin irritation.

Then add in a few drops each of lavender essential oil and tea tree essential oil if you would like. Both of these oils have their own unique properties that can benefit your skin. Once you’ve added in all of these ingredients, cap your bottle and give it a good shake to mix everything. Your rose toner is ready to use!

[Question - Insurance] Losing Medicare over an Internship?

Im not sure if this is the right subreddit so if it's not let me know and I'll remove it.

So over there past 8 months I have had an internship with a software development company. I was paid hourly making a modest 15/hour. I am a dependent of my father. Recently my father started freaking out about how I was for sure going to lose my Medicare coverage because of this job and I was putting the family at risk of losing theirs too. I don't know how any of this works and trying to research it on my open just confused me even more.

He's saying the government is going to use the fact that I have money saved in my bank account as a reason to take it away. This internship is really important for my career after college so I don't want to give it up but I also don't want to lose my health care coverage.

Help me make an oil mix?

I'd like to try making an oil mixture to use as a nighttime moisturizer. My skin is pretty normal, doesn't get excessively oily or dry. I am not prone to acne unless it is hormonal or I've been touching my face a lot. I also sometimes break out with certain heavy products.

I'm looking for a blend that truly moisturizes my skin, helps even out my tone/brightens, and helps minimize fine lines and the early signs of aging.

Here are the oils I currently own:

  • Apricot
  • Argan
  • Castor
  • Hemp Seed
  • Jojoba
  • Rosehip
  • Squalane
  • Sweet Almond

What do you think a good blend/ratio would look like from some or all of these? Am I missing anything that I should include (like Calendula, Moringa, Bitter Orange, etc.)?

Thank you for your help, I'm interested to see what you have to say!

[Question - Other] Carte Vitale: Barriers for U.S. Adoption?

U.S. student/citizen here who has been trying to self-educate on the U.S. Healthcare by reading random books, most recently "The Healing of America" by TR Reid.

One of my interesting takeaways was how admin costs are ridiculous and how the France [also read Germany has something of this sort as well] has developed a green credit card called the Carte Vitale to circumvent these issues by digitally storing the patient's entire medical records in this card while making billing extremely convenient as well. As I read about this, I was wondering what are the barriers to adopting this and why the U.S. hasn't tried adopting this approach yet.

(PS sorry if this has been answered already: I spent 15 minutes on Google + Reddit and couldn't find anything and thought I'd save myself some time)

[Question - insurance] Must I register by state?

Hello, I am a 25 year old who is about to lose insurance coverage through my mother on 12/31/2019. I am currently doing the research to get myself coverage but quickly ran into an issue. I travel for months at a time for work (small business owner). I have an address in Florida as well as in Pennsylvania. My ID, license plate, etc. is all under Pennsylvania. I am not a student. I’m not sure which state to register under. It is my understanding that if I were to register as a PA resident, no docs in Florida would accept my coverage. There are plenty of other people in the country who have a similar life situation, I am sure. Any one have advice on this? I split my time nearly equally between the two states, but am often working in others as well! There’s a high chance I will not be in Pennsylvania during a time I need to see a doc.
